Dr. Oz Show
He said this on his show and Oprahs: Sugar in your blood is like glass shards scraping your insides (arteries, veins, etc.). It cuts the walls and that scabs up and that is what hardening of the arteries is and that causes heart attacks, nerve damage, kidney damage, etc.
Get rid of old ideas about diets
An addict alone is in bad company. (Why Spark People is SOOO great!)
Pick 2 meals and rotate them simplify / automate your meals (I don't know how easy this would be, but planning and maybe having meals planned for a week or 2 weeks and rotating those would work)
Apparently they have lowered the blood sugar level which determines whether you have Diabetes or now. A blood sugar of 100 is now considered pre-diabetic where it used to be 120. The push is to keep sugars under 100 it sounds like. {I guess that's what a normal person is (under 100).}
Oprah with Dr. Oz
10% of Diabetics are Type 1 and 90% are Type 2. For Type 2 90% can be reversed.
Dr. Mike Memmett (sp?): 10,000 steps every day no excuses email someone every day telling them how many steps (well, he told the lady to email him every day, but the idea of being accountable to someone was a good idea) - use a pedometer and even have a back up pedometer so you have no excuse
Symptoms of Diabetes
constant thirst
urinating all the time
non-healing infections
tingling toes
blurred vision
Risk factors
belly fat
sedentary lifestyle
family history
smoking (kills your pancreas)
If your waist size (at belly button) is more than half of your height your risk factor goes up
Foods
100% whole grain if you can't find it then you should demand it; if people demand these foods the stores will start stocking them - apparently there are areas that don't have these types of foods in stores (esp. poorer neighborhoods/areas)
Avoid white foods (sugar, white bread, etc.)
eat foods that dont have a label
Best Life Diet: managing diabetes and pre-diabetes by: Bob Greene
exercise: crucial
if you exercise 30 minutes a day risk is lowered by 60% of getting diabetes
exercise is not negotiable
strength training bands/weights/dumb bells is good for maintaining joints and muscles raises metabolism
walk every day 30 minutes
exercise lowers blood sugar
exercise is not negotiable (I wrote this twice on purpose)
hidden sugar
ranch dressing 3 tsp in every serving
regular soda (10 tsp for each can)
2 Tbsp ketchup 2 tsp sugar
donuts glazed up to 13 tsp soda with each donut
Number one thing to change:
Dr. Oz: Take the white things out (flour, sugar, pasta, rice and I think he means potatoes, too, because he made Carnie Wilson through some away when they were throwing away other junk on his show today)
Dr. Smith (can't remember if that's his name or not): Cut out fried foods
Bob: exercise
behavior is the hardest thing to change

They showed a woman at the beginning who has Type 1 Diabetes who is on dialysis and has had her leg and part of her other foot amputated. She thought she could eat what she wanted and take insulin to cover the sugars she ate. BIG wake up call for us here as my 9 year old has type 1 diabetes. We don't let him go crazy (not even at Halloween or other holidays), but his sugar levels now will affect him down the road. As for me, my blood sugars have been higher. I am finally at a point where I WANT to do something about it. I NEED to start exercising and I need to start NOW. However, I'm STILL making excuses!!! NO MORE EXCUSES!!!!
IF YOU THINK YOU COULD EVEN BE AT RISK FOR DIABETES - GET CHECKED.
