Senseless Tragedy

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

My son-in-law's brother died Tuesday night by asphyxiation during a seizure. He was unemployed and had no medical insurance, so his sister did not take him to the ER. If he'd had medical treatment, he most likely would not have died. It makes me wonder, how many people die each day in this country because they have no medical coverage?

For the first time in my life, I'm facing the prospect of not having health insurance. My COBRA runs out at the end of the month, and due to preexisting conditions, I can't get health insurance. Fortunately, I'm a Navy veteran, so I may have to turn to the VA for help. I hate the thought of using services that should be going to our returning veterans, but what choice do I have? My country is failing me and millions more.

Just reading this and I am so sorry for your loss. That is very senseless. I lost my husband in 2010. It was pretty senseless, too, in that he died in remission from leukemia but from a super bug he got in the hospital .

I am really sorry about your insurance, too. I went a time without insurance and was uninsurable like you until I finally got medicare. Now just when I get medicare it is being threatened.

Use the VA -- in many places it is a lifesaver. My brother actually had open heart surgery at a VA hospital and that was 30! years ago.

So sorry for your loss. Hopefully this new legislation will at least help to stop things like that happening.

You're right -- it was senseless. Hopefully this will taken care of if the politicians will get off their butts and work for the people instead of fighting for positions. Sometimes it makes me so angry. It would help your loss but maybe it will help others.

sry to hear about your loss

im in health care. and yes our country is falling short on this issue

im in geriatrics. so we spent millions on new tech. to keep us alive longer. but take no responsibility for how they are taken care of in this golden age.

it took this country a bit too long to realize the professionals that were abusing the system ages ago

sorry to hear about what happened and i hate to think what your sister in law is going through right now.not only has she lost her brother she will also feel guilty that she didnīt do any more to help.she will need all the help and support she can get.this is a thing very near to my heart a lifetime friend of mine died of exactly the same thing last year at the age of 40 on his sons 12 birthday.he had medical insurance but it happened so quickly thatno amont of medical insurance in the world could help unless he had been in hospital when it happened which he wasnīt.

re the va i know eactly where you are coming from my father was the same and wouldnīt go to saafa which is the english equiverlant of the va when he needed something the english health service wouldnīt cover.we managed to persuade him in the end he had been in the forces his whole life till he was invilided out as he damaged his back in a parachut fall.like my father you have served your land so it is something you are entitled to and should let your land do for you.i.e. repay the dept they owe to you for what you have done to them.

i hope you get your insurance sorted out there seems to be some good advice given.let us know how you get on and good luck.

    Dear Ellen,
Thanks for thinking about me and stopping by my page to say hi. It has been too long. I'm sorry I haven't been around recently. I am very sorry to hear about your loss and send my prayers for your family. We sure do have a mess in our country and I am praying we get it fixed soon.

Also, really hope the suggestions here help you with your insurance. And, I support you if you need to get help from the VA. You gave of yourself and deserve the coverage and assistance as you are in need.

    Hugs and lots of love,
    Paula

I'm so sorry for your loss, thats horrible, and sad too! :(
I work in the healthcare industry too and I mirror what CREOLELADY1 says, that legally no ER can turn anyone away for lack of insurance.

Also in regards to your COBRA, there is another option, talk to your insurance company, its called either Conversion or Portability (depends which state your in, as to the name of the plan). There is no pre-existing condition clause, but there are strict time frames to which you are eligible. You have to apply within 63 days of group coverage ending, so that is employer group/AND/or Cobra coverage. Its designed to start the 1st day of non-coverage, so no break in coverage. The application should be short because there is no health screen. So please call your insurance company, there are other options :) Hope that helps....sorry for the rambeling on...lol. I work in administration healthcare so Im telling people about it everyday...lol!

emoticon to you! Again, sorry for you loss!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's a shame that people without, and even some people with, insurance, are making decisions about whether or not to get potentially life threatening situations treated based on how much it is going to cost them. Cost should not have to be a deciding factor when you have an emergency medical situation.

I totally agree. I'm an R.N. and can tell you that everyone should be on board for universal health insurance. We are all going to suffer if we don't alleviate this problem. Spread the word.

Not to mention the ridiculous expense of COBRA!! I'm sorry for your loss but as a nurse I would like to share with you that no ER can turn someone away for lack of insurance. Never neglect serious medical conditions - let them bill you if you have to - just do what you can.
