Time to Use a Heart Rate Monitor

Wednesday, February 03, 2010

This morning, I decided to try a different pace on the treadmill. I walked 4.2 mph, and when it came time for the running minute, I did 6.7 mph. All went well until the last run. The treadmill said I reached a HR of 177 -- "only" 17 higher than my maximum HR is supposed to be. My HR came down quickly when I stopped running, but one look at my RED face in the locker room convinced me that I had gone too far.

Where did I put that HRM? It's time to learn how to use it!

Pushing yourself hard is good, just be sure you're not pushing too hard.

Keep pushing, but be careful. Find that HRM! While we feel "ok" when we push that hard and maybe our hearts/brains can take it for a little while it's hard on our recovery. Also look at it this way when you keep your heart rate in the 65% to 85% range you are burning more fat, when you reach the anaerobic range you are breaking down muscle which is what burns calories when you aren't working out. What better reason to keep your heart rate in the right range.

Great work! Use that HRM! I just got mine last week & have really enjoyed getting the new numbers of calories burned. Sometimes SP gives me a few more burned, sometimes the HRM does - but they balance out well.
