Coming back from being a slug

Monday, February 01, 2010

I donno why my period was so bad this month but I can't shake it. Probably because I started on my off days from exercise. My body just kinda takes that as a hint of ok time to be SUPER lazy. If I exercise when my period starts up i tend to take the time better. Scott has been buying fig newtons. Don't ask me why they are a sore spot for me. But when I need sugar, even fig newtons will call out to me. Ugh I ate like 12 of them yesterday lol It was bad and I felt so crappy for doing so. I even woke up feeling like BLEH. I was supposed to go run yesterday and It never happened.

Today has been better so far. Our snow has been melting very slowly. I planned all day I would do my long training run for the week today. Scott went out running with me and he picked our route. I am not sure why I let him do this its always a bad idea. He always picks hilly routes and he doesn't seem to realize they are hilly. He also needed to run further then I did. So we planned on going to my halfway point and I could run back alone. Well he took me to campus across all these busy busy streets and I told him I was not going back alone. On our way back we ran across train tracks when the arm of the train crossing started coming down lol The train was an Amtrak so it was bookin! Ugh that was scary! So yeah I think I will just run by myself and plan out flat routes. There is no point in training for hills when the half marathon is on a flat route!!!! I am sure he doesn't wanna go with me again either. I bitched at him nonstop about how stupid the route was lol I did get my 4 mile run in today tho!

Zumba was good tonight too! When I first started doing it burning 800 calories wasn't hard. The more I do it the harder reaching 800 calories becomes. I am getting way more used to doing it I guess. Now getting over 700 calories is becoming harder. Today I did 765 so that was good. The class is slowly dieing down, very very slowly. So I burned 1300 calories today. I gotta stay in my calories for the night. I will keep drinking my water. Hopefully my period will be gone by tomorrow and i will be able to eat like a normal human being again.

Scott and I are on week 2 of being vegetarians! He told me he saw a salad at work the other day and noticed there was bacon on it and he thought "ewww greasy" lol He said the longer he does this the easier its getting. We need to get some protein powder. Anyone have any suggestions on brands? or flavors? I heard vanilla was good. I hate that you have to buy it HUGE tubs and spend 10-15 dollars on it. I wish u could just try some and see what u like before u have a huge tub of something that tastes horrible.

wow man, i go away for a few days and i come back and ur eating blood oranges, riding a new bike, buying bikinis, losing more weight, and STILL being a vegetarian!!! ROCK ON! ur doing great. love reading ur blogs! i get what ur saying about it being harder to burn the cals in zumba now, any time i get used to something more its like that. im still burning about 10 per min, so that's always my goal. if u want to try something new, im looking for a buddy to keep me accountable for the www.twohundredsitups.com challenge. i did the pushups one, and made it through 4 and a half of 6 weeks and i was totally stronger and happier as a result. let me know if ur interested, it's actually crunches and not really situps. i need motivation in the form of a challenge friend!

We buy the Whole Foods brand "360 degree soy protein powder". We buy flavorless so that we can add it in anything. Have you tried Fig Newmans? Paul Newman brand, whole wheat, I think less sugar then the regular ones (not by much- but hey at least they are a little healthier). How do you track your mileage when running outside? Do you wear a pedometer?

I envy your ability to run - my body will not let me do that anymore. But I DO Zumba! Is the instructor not keeping the routines switched up to prevent boredom (& maybe even dreaded calorie plateuas?) My gosh my first Zumba class -I thought I was going to have a heart attack! But it was soooo much fun. Do you have a sash covered with little coins for around your waist while you dance? The more noise you make the more calories you burn! LOL

Protein powders - call around to health food and vitamin shops in your area & ask if they have a variety of protein powders in sample sizes. The health food store nearest me has a variety of different brands available in single serving packets. Some whey based, some soy based - a variety. And that way I was able to pick out the brand I liked best. I definitely agree about vanilla. It's easiest to make things in your own flavors.

I'm a fan of spirutein. What you choose will depend on whether you require a specific protein source, amount of protein, and what other nutrients you want in your powder. Prices vary from one place to another so shop around. Some stores even have liberal return policies so if you get something you really hate they'll give you some or most of your money back. HTH

Of course, online might be the cheapest way once you know what you need. But I like to support my local small businesses so I stick with them.

Have you tried TVP yet? Texturized vegetable protein. I love it in spaghetti sauce, chili, etc.

Good luck!

Go with vanilla for the protein powder. You can't go wrong with vanilla!

I don't like fig newtons so I can be around them with no problem but Oreos and Chocolate Chip cookies are another thing. I like the fig part not the outside.

I am interested in the protein powder as well if you find out what kind is good.

Thanks for your comment on my blog! I had a great laugh at your story about running with Scott. (Still laughing...) I have similar issues when I go biking with my spouse (or walking, for that matter). I have determined what I believe are the least hilliest, least traffic roads. So, unless I'm planning a hill workout, I like to take my routes. Not so much him. I end up following behind him nattering to myself about how this is a ~ridiculous~ route, yada yada yada. I think it may be a male-female thing. I went on a fabulous ride (albeit one that just about killed me) with a friend who is a hard-core bike racer last summer. She had awesome tips, like 'we're coming up on a road that has a sewer line repavement - ride along that and the smoother pavement makes it easier'. I'd never hear anything like that from my spouse!!

Wow, you've had a lot going on lately! Congratulations on keeping up with the vegetarian eating plan, I think it will be a lot healthier for you in the long run. I was a vegetarian for many years throughout high school and college, and was a vegan for a while. I got so used to it that I naturally pick meat-free dishes and eat very little meat. I just don't really like it and don't crave it.

If you get any good recommendations for protein powders please let me know. I'm with you, I don't want to buy a huge tub of it only to find out it's disgusting. Right now I do protein bars, but they can get expensive too.

How do you figure out how many calories you burn in Zumba? They're starting a Zumba class at the YMCA this month and I'm thinking of trying it out. Unfortunately I have two left feet and my balance isn't very good, so I don't know if it will work out.

Have a great week, and good luck with your running!
