Heartburn and fatigue

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Normally, my bedtime routine includes reading for about half hour to an hour before going to sleep, but with the fatigue from radiation, most nights I can barely manage a half dozen pages, and for the last 4 nights, I haven't done any reading at all. Very frustrating, because my nightly reading is something I look forward to to relax and unwind before going to sleep. Last year, I read 41 books; this year, January is almost over and I've only managed to finish one, and that was on the 3rd of the month. But I know this fatigue is only temporary, and when I am finished with the radiation, it will start to get better.

The worst side effect though is the heartburn, especially at night. I normally take my prescription Prilosec in the morning; I've done that for the last few years daily because of my acid reflux, but at times, when I have had gastritis attacks, my internist has told me I can double on it, and take a dose in the evening too, so that is what I started doing last night. Hopefully it will help. I have also been burping a lot the last few days, another symptom of my acid reflux flaring up. I had to see the doctor after my radiation today; Tuesdays are my "doctor days" at the radiation center; and he said to keep doubling up on the Prilosec, and he is giving me Friday off from my treatments, so I'll have a long weekend to recover some. I still get the same number of treatments, the day I miss will just be added on to the end.

On the way back home, I thought about trying taking a liquid antacid before I leave for my treatments; maybe having it that coating in my stomach will help a little bit while I'm getting the radiation. Just not sure if it would still be coating my stomach by the time I got my treatment though; I leave my house a half hour before my treatments; I guess I will just have to try it and see.

I also went with my mom for her 6 month checkup with the oncologist. She had a normal mammogram, and is still cancer free, so that is a big relief. She had non Hodgkins lymphoma 7 years ago.

At least with the sitting and waiting I did today, I did get some reading done; I hope I'll be done with my current book before the month is over, but I'm not going to force myself to finish it by a certain date if I am too tired. And I think for the book I read next, I'll choose a shorter one, lol.

I was going to suggest reading at other times during the day but you did that. I always take a book to any appointment because you never know when you will a delay. So glad about your Mom. I think about you and your family everyday; praying for all of us. Have a blessed day. I also love your new pic.

Hi Shari...love your new "do." Great news about your mom. One less thing to worry about now. What a huge relief for all of you.

Hope you can get the reflux under control. I take Prilosec, too, and double up most days.

Have a good day today.

Hugs,
Sharon

    Hi Shari,
I love your new profile picture. I think about you and your treatment plan everyday. Glad to hear your mom is doing well.
One day at a time. I am learning that it makes it a little easier. I am impressed that you are still reading and that you can pay attention long enough to turn a page. I managed three books last year. Room for improvement.
Oh just a question. Does taking liquid medication affect how your radiation works?

emoticon for your mom's great check up!! And sorry for the fact that you've been feeling a little bit puny recently.

Maybe instead of taking that liquid antacid before you leave the house you could take it when you get to the radiation center. That might work out better because for sure it would still be with you when you had your treatment.

And finally, I like the new photo emoticon

I really hope that the extra prilosec helps. I know I'm just miserable when my stomach is upset. I hope you get a chance to relax and read for a little while tonight.

I love your new profile pic ... I'm assuming this is your new "do". It looks great!

I'm glad to hear your mom's test results and I hope you're able to get the heartburn under control; it's awful.

I think your nighttime reading ritual is fantastic -- 41 books in a year is beyond impressive! I love to read and have an enormous collection, but I am downright awful about getting much reading done the past couple of years. I am in the middle of three books at the same time right now!

I'm sorry that fatigue is disrupting such an enjoyable activity for you. Maybe you could carve out a half hour in the mornings instead?

That's fantastic news about your mom's checkup! I hope the liquid antacid can give you some relief from your treatments.

Thanks for another great update! I always find your blogs very calming -- you have such a collected demeanor! emoticon
