Today marks the beginning of our third year on SparkPeople. On January 17, 2008, my husband was sitting around in his easy chair, 60 pounds overweight, feeling unhappy and FAT! I knew he wasn't happy with the weight he had gained because he had already asked if I would go back to Weight Watchers. I told him I would only go back this time if he joined with me, but we both knew that was unlikely. The cost of joining and then weekly fees. Missing meetings because they don't have one when I am free. Waiting in line to weigh-in. I really did not want to have to go back to that! I needed something that fit my life.
Over the 20 years of our marriage, I have struggled constantly with my weight. After my first pregnancy I lost 25 pounds only to gain back 30 over the next 3 years. My husband and I began walking every day and lost that weight. Then a second pregnancy and another 35 pounds. A new job that required 10 weeks of "boot camp" dropped that excess weight, but once boot camp was over, I began to gain again. It took a couple of years, but I gained it all back and began adding a few more. Soon, both my husband and I were both 60-70 pounds overweight and our health was showing it.
On this day 2 years ago my husband typed "free diet plan" into a search engine and Spark People was the first site that popped up. He asked me to look at it and see whether I thought we could use this type of program. As soon as I logged on, I knew this site was special. Having become a "diet expert" over the years, I knew that the first step to successful weight loss is accountability...accurately logging the food you eat. Not only could we do that with this site, but it was automatic..no more having to look up calories in a little book or figure out points...just enter what you ate and how much and Poof! Your total appears. I knew my husband would love this and so, we both signed up.
Over the next 5 months, we began to compete against each other for SparkPoints and in turn were reading articles and learning more about being healthy. We learned new ways to eat, cook and shop We found the message boards and a whole community where we could ask for and offer help to others. We added exercise back into our lives and began to feel better and, oh yeah, we both lost 60 pounds.
We both hit goal together in May of 2008 and in that five months a true change occurred, we quit dieting. Instead, we started living healthy. Since then we have maintained that weight loss and tomorrow is the beginning of a new year with Spark People. New year, new goals, new outlook, new life!
