Brown Bag Lunch Ideas: I wanted to pass along this great idea if you need to carry a lunch to work or school. This came from one of the members of our Daniel Fast Community -- pack a baked potato for a brown bag lunch! They are easily reheated and you can then top yours with some olive oil, salt and pepper, salsa and all kinds of cooked vegetables or vegetarian chili that you bring from home! Easy, easy, easy!
You can also take containers of soups, stews and salads in your brown bag. I encourage people to make double recipes at home and then use one for dinner and one for lunches during the week.
Store-bought Foods: You have discovered that there are few prepared foods that you can eat while on the Daniel Fast. But here are a few that you might want to pick up that do serve us fasters well. Again, be sure to READ THE LABELS to see what ingredients are included and that they comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines (available at www.Daniel-Fast.com/dfguide.ht
Newman's Own Oil & Vinegar Salad Dressing, Triscuit Crackers, Rice Cakes (I buy the brown rice variety), Whole Wheat Matzo, Whole Grain Shredded Wheat, Organic canned beans and tomatoes, "lite" canned fruit, unsweetened soy milk, boxed vegetable broth, Ezekiel boxed cereals, Ezekiel Whole Grain Tortillas, 100% Peanut Butter, Frozen Fruits and Vegetables, and Whole Wheat Pasta (I found whole wheat couscous and whole wheat orzo in the Kosher section of the grocery store just yesterday).
This list is not exhastive, but it might give you some ideas. The food industry is taking notice of the growing number of consumers who want food that is better for their health. So there are many more prepared foods than even 12 months ago. However, you still have to make sure "health foods" comply with the Daniel Fast Guidelines. Many manufactures add "cane juice" which is merely sugar and also cheeses. So remember that part of what we do when on the Daniel Fast is to READ THE LABELS. This is a great habit all the time so we know what we are putting into our bodies when we eat prepared foods.
Quiet Time with Your Father: Please remember, the most important reason for the fast is to increase your trust in God and to grow closer to Him. I do believe He is preparing His church for the things to come. I can't say what or when, but our Father wants us to rely on Him with our whole hearts. What if the reason He has moved so many of His people to this spiritual discipline is to strengthen us, train us, teach us . . . how would engage in this time of prayer and fasting if it was to prepare us?
Our God knows every detail of the future . . . we don't. But what we do know is that He wants us to put our trust in Him. I had to learn how to do that . . . and I continue to learn. Putting all our trust in God is not a behavior one learns overnight. It's something we grow into. And one of the ways we can grow in the love, knowledge and trust in God is through prayer and fasting.
