Quick Tip#17~ Have a little Grapefruit Juice with your CoQ10!

Friday, January 15, 2010

Here's a link to an article, which basically states that bioavailability (absorption ) of CoQ10 is increased by as much as 50% when you take your CoQ10 with grapefruit juice. Its an in vitro rather than a in vivo study, so whether or not these results would translate to live humans is unknown.

    Great info youse guys!
We've got some real smarties on our team!

Incidentally here's a list of medications effected by grapefruit juice, not all of them are... from what I understand thyroid meds are not. Comments don't hyperlink so you'll have to cut and paste these into your browser window.

Just a little note, if you take any medications you do *not* want to drink grapefruit with it as it will increase the effect of the doseage.

Oops, sorry, I didn't realize armsports already addressed this.

Grapefruit juice can actually affect the absorption of lots of supplements and medications. I think it works by inhibiting enzymes in the intestinal track that actually assist in blocking absorption. So by doing this, grapefruit juice can significantly INCREASE the amount of drug or supplement that is absorbed. Sounds great but for some prescription meds this can cause issues, hence the warnings that are often given regarding its consumption.

Interesting since acidic juices decrease the bioavailablity of most other drugs!
