The Spark Book and Making Small Changes

I was so happy that I got the Spark book delivered on Saturday and I've been reading a little bit every day. I especially loved the story of founder Chris Downie and I have been making an effort to do a little something towards my goals everyday, even if it is only a 10 minute workout. I'm also trying to use this 10 minute theory on other goals I want to accomplish in my life. If I want a clean house but feel overwhelmed by the mess, well then I'll just take 10 minutes to clean in 1 room and then a little more the next day, or just tackle 1 or 2 drawers in a dresser.
One of the biggest changes I think I've made is with eating and cooking. I already knew I liked to cook but as a working mom with a small toddler, I turned more often than not to fast and convenient food. Now I am spending more time every night cooking healthy and trying lots of new recipes (many from this website!) so I will have good, healthy breakfasts, lunches, and dinners each day, rather than getting to work and realizing I either need to eat oatmeal or canned soup I have at my desk. Now I have meals I actually look forward to enjoying. Tonight I roasted an acorn squash and a quinoa, spinach, and goat cheese concoction that I will pair together tomorrow for lunch. Sunday, I baked a few sweet potatoes and ate them the last few days with a small serving of black beans, broccoli, mozzarella cheese and salsa. It was delicious and so simple - it just took a little time to pop in the oven and prepare. The cooking itself is almost therapeutic and makes me think of the pleasure I will get from the food the next day.
I do hope to be able to start a streak of getting up at 5am before work to do a workout. I have done it a few times, but it has not been consistent. I realize that i need to go to bed earlier in order to accomplish this because the bed in the morning is winning out and I cannot let this happen. The morning workouts are the best way for me to get my exercise in. I always walk on my lunch break at work though. We are lucky enough to have a small gym in the building with treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, and weights (machines and free weights). I hope to vary up my routine there a little too. Today instead of just walking, I added a little jog into it every few minutes or so. I also really like the Coach Nicole 10 min workout videos and I've been using those a lot too.
So there it is - what I've been doing in a nutshell. But I do feel good because I am at least doing something, even if it is not the full blown workouts I used to be able to do a few years ago. I realize my life just does not allow for that anymore and squeezing in fitness will always be a challenge for me, but one that I know I need to take.
