Treadmill vs. Outdoor Run

Monday, January 04, 2010

Treadmill Pros:
-- consistent speed even when I am tired
-- do not have to battle weather
-- watch tv/movie while I run
-- the screen with the time and distance are glaring in your face
-- hill workouts/tempo workout at your finger tips

Treadmill Cons:
-- stay in the same place
-- overheat because the gym is warm
-- the screen with the time and distance are glaring in your face

Outdoor Run Pros:
-- scenery changes
-- speed adjusts depending on fatigue
-- four-legged friend can go with me
-- speed play with four-legged friend
-- four-legged friend guilts me into running
-- tempo run during any run

Outdoor Run Cons:
-- weather issues
-- getting lost
-- my four-legged friend likes to chase wild rabbits
-- four-legged friend guilts me into going out when I am exhausted
-- If you don't live where there are hills, you have to go find them.

I am pretty happy with both of my runs tonight. I played a little bit with a nice 2.11 mile run on the treadmill. I really am not use to the treadmill, but it is alright. If the weather was too bad, I think this is the way to go. I also think it will allow me to get hills into the mix. :o) When I returned home from the gym, RJ looked at me with longing eyes. I decided to take him out for a nice easy 2 miler. It went by so much faster than running on the treadmill. Who would have thought? I need to figure out how I want to incorporate the gym into my routine. Do I want to get up early to hit an early morning class and run with RJ in the evening? So many things to ponder. Until next time...(977.67 to go)

I've grown to love my treadmill. I still love running outside, but it's not always practical. Good luck! I just signed up for Bay to Breakers--my first race in about 5 years. I'm happy to get back to it.

I never thought about the runs/walks like that but I can say my pets love to go with me and keep me going when I am ready to quit.

Nice blog and I like your humour. I love to walk/jog outdoors, but since I live in Alberta, Canada, I mostly opt for my treadmill in the winter. I can easily walk for an hour outside, but 45 minutes has been my upper limit on the treadmill, so far. I haven't used music or TV, yet, tho.

Keep up the good work!

Sheila
