The Greatest Victory is Conquering Yourself

Leadership expert John C. Maxwell says the greatest victory he has every day is victory over self. Who we are determines how we see others. "This principle says once we get our own act together, we will be able to help others get their acts together.

Isn’t that what SparkPeople is all about. Helping others obtain or reach their goals. We as an Online Community are so successful because if you really think about it we are mentoring each other. We all try to help and fix others. But we have to fix ourselves first.

My greatest victory every day is victory over self. I don’t want to put this in past tense because this is a daily battle I have to fight. Not a day goes by where I don’t have to work on myself and battle the temptations of self. The first person we must examine is ourselves. "People unaware of who they are and what they do often damage relationships with others. The way to change that is to look in the mirror," Maxwell says.

Our biggest obstacles to our success always starts with us. What do you have locked up there in your brain? What is your mentality? What preconceived notions do you have about you and your strengths? Do you even see strength or have you beaten your self up so much that all you see is someone that is very weak. My eyes have so been opened here on SparkPeople as I read their blogs or their posts and they reveal things about themselves that are sometime pretty horrific. There is physical abuse, verbal abuse, financial hardships, and so many more factors as to who we are. Many fellow Sparkers don’t have to beat themselves up because they have their family and loved ones do it for them. That really saddens me. It is something we have to put a stop to.

The philosopher Plato said, “The first and best victory is to conquer self.” We have to get a handle on our problems and gain the control back, that may not be an easy task but we need to start somewhere. We need to really sit down and examine ourselves. Have a serious conversation with ourselves to find out just what we want to accomplish on this journey. Then we need to map out a game plan and list the steps we need to do to accomplish it.

We are going to do this ”transformation” slowly. It is all a matter of Baby Steps. We are going to take this slowly one step at a time so there will be no more beating up of ourselves. Just as a baby learning to walk takes a few steps forward and then falls down or takes a few steps backward, we will do the same. Just as a baby falls but then they get right back up again to try all over, we will do the same. The only difference that you and that baby has is that you have SparkPeople. We will be here to catch you when you fall or lend a hand to help put you back on track. Let the magic of SparkPeople do that for you.

In order for that magic to work, it has to start with you! You have to be in this to win this! You really need to spend time on SparkPeople to absorb the knowledge and all the love and support you have at your fingertips. It really is true, the more you Spark the better you will do.
