The Greatest Victory is Conquering Yourself

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Sunday, January 03, 2010

Leadership expert John C. Maxwell says the greatest victory he has every day is victory over self. Who we are determines how we see others. "This principle says once we get our own act together, we will be able to help others get their acts together.

Isn’t that what SparkPeople is all about. Helping others obtain or reach their goals. We as an Online Community are so successful because if you really think about it we are mentoring each other. We all try to help and fix others. But we have to fix ourselves first.

My greatest victory every day is victory over self. I don’t want to put this in past tense because this is a daily battle I have to fight. Not a day goes by where I don’t have to work on myself and battle the temptations of self. The first person we must examine is ourselves. "People unaware of who they are and what they do often damage relationships with others. The way to change that is to look in the mirror," Maxwell says.

Our biggest obstacles to our success always starts with us. What do you have locked up there in your brain? What is your mentality? What preconceived notions do you have about you and your strengths? Do you even see strength or have you beaten your self up so much that all you see is someone that is very weak. My eyes have so been opened here on SparkPeople as I read their blogs or their posts and they reveal things about themselves that are sometime pretty horrific. There is physical abuse, verbal abuse, financial hardships, and so many more factors as to who we are. Many fellow Sparkers don’t have to beat themselves up because they have their family and loved ones do it for them. That really saddens me. It is something we have to put a stop to.

The philosopher Plato said, “The first and best victory is to conquer self.” We have to get a handle on our problems and gain the control back, that may not be an easy task but we need to start somewhere. We need to really sit down and examine ourselves. Have a serious conversation with ourselves to find out just what we want to accomplish on this journey. Then we need to map out a game plan and list the steps we need to do to accomplish it.

We are going to do this ”transformation” slowly. It is all a matter of Baby Steps. We are going to take this slowly one step at a time so there will be no more beating up of ourselves. Just as a baby learning to walk takes a few steps forward and then falls down or takes a few steps backward, we will do the same. Just as a baby falls but then they get right back up again to try all over, we will do the same. The only difference that you and that baby has is that you have SparkPeople. We will be here to catch you when you fall or lend a hand to help put you back on track. Let the magic of SparkPeople do that for you.

In order for that magic to work, it has to start with you! You have to be in this to win this! You really need to spend time on SparkPeople to absorb the knowledge and all the love and support you have at your fingertips. It really is true, the more you Spark the better you will do.

This is an interesting concept, there is another saying by the mystic H.I. Khan that says, "The greatest religion is self confidence." How to reconcile the two?

It's a matter of parsing out the true self and the false self, the spark of divinity within verses the habitual. And yes, it's a lifetime's work.

Great insights! Thank you. At Christmas Eve Midnight Mass, the Bishop, who was presiding, told the story of: Sometimes it is not the thing itself, it's how you view it, and what you chose to do with it.

SparkPeople is helping me to view myself as a worthy, beautiful being who is capable of anything and I chose to live healthier and more positively.

Honey, you couldn't get me off Spark if you tried.
This is the place I go to visit my new family. A family that is full of wisdom, support and love. A family so very different from my birth family.
I've made so many strides to a healthy life in the last 6 months while I've been here and I couldn't have done it without the wonderful people here like you.

You are so right Yvonne. I'm in it to win it also!

I love helping other spark people. This is the first time in my LIFE that I actually see myself doing this. I believe in myself and in the Power of God to help me continue to be the person He wants me to be. Healthier, wiser and more in control of my self and able to help others gain control.

It IS one step at a time. SOmetimes going off track, but wonderful emoticon 's here to guide us back to the path.

So true!!! This reminds me of the song by Michael Jackson...Man in the Mirror. There will always be family, friends or strangers who don't believe in us. But they are not on this journey. They have not walked where we have. They are not us!!! And the only way I have accomplished what I have, despite actions and verbal comments from others, is because I believed I could do it!!! Yes, the walk has been challenging. I do not love getting up at 5:30 am every weekday to exercise. I still crave Dairy Queen but did not give in! Instead I ate a pear and a piece of cheese :) However, the rewards of my hard work are paying off and I LOVE wearing clothes I could not fit into before. I LOVE looking in the mirror and seeing an improved body. And most importantly, I LOVE the fact that I put myself first and did it for ME!!! I still have 23 more pounds to go till my goal weight but I more determined than ever to get there! And yes having Sparking friends that support will help me along as well!
