New and Improved Meal Plans!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Monday, December 28, 2009

We know that our members rely on the SparkPeople meal plans to learn how to eat better and stay within their calorie and nutrient ranges, and when you told us about improvements you'd like to see, we listened!

Today, we added new and improved meal plans to the site! As always, you can find meal plans by viewing your Nutrition Tracker. If you turned off your meal plans in the past, you'll have to click the button that says "Show Meal Plans" in order to see them. Here are some of the improvements you will notice:

  • An overall improvement in the quality and variety of the meals

  • Meals that better match up with our nutrition recommendations for carbohydrates, protein and fat. In the past, some of our meal plans were a little higher in carbs and lower in protein than we'd like. Our recommendations (50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat) haven't changed, but our new meal plans have been updated to better fit these requirements.

  • Directions for preparing meals. When we thought it wasn't clear how to prepare the foods listed in a meal, we added some short instructions, sort of like a mini recipe. Simply scroll over the word "Directions" next to the meal name (when applicable; not all meals will have directions) to learn how to cook or combine the foods into a meal.

If you have your meal plans turned on, you'll start seeing these new meal plans and directions the next time you view a new day or meal. This may sound confusing, so here's a short way to explain it: When you look at a day or grocery list that you have not looked at before, you will see new meal plans there.

We hope you enjoy these upgrades to our meal plans!

Wow, what an upgrade, thats what I love about this place, you never settle for the status-quo. That in turn makes it easier for use to strive for a higher standard. Leading by example, I applaud you for that.

When you make your meal plan you can note that you can't have eggs or dairy. You should go back and revise it and see what happens! :)

I like the principle but in order to make this work for me I have to spend HOURS substituting foods since I am lactose intolerant and allergic to eggs. Additionally, I only get seasonal and organic produce, grains and proteins, with the exception of a few frozen items, so I end up spending way too much time swapping things out to make it feasible. I really just need to be able to augment and increase my protein intake and have found a lot of grains that help with that. I don't enjoy eating meat every day and have had to struggle with that elusive protein element since I can't just replace it with cheese or milk.

I am sure that for a lot of people that don't have my finicky dietary restrictions this tool is fabulous.

I'm glad to see that some egg dished made it into the breakfast meals, but why is it all boxed eggs or egg whites? I'd like to see an option to substitute a real egg. I don't find the meal planner very useful because you can only choose from foods that are in the approved meals. The foods that are approved seem so arbitrary, skim milk is on a list, but not 2%. Then another list includes half and half.

I am looking forward to checking this out. I love to cook and have tried to stick with healthy recipes but they are not always the greatest. My main complaint from the previous meal plans was that for the week you would only need a portion of a fresh ingredient that would not keep. I have two people at home and was going to waste to much. I am hoping that I will be able to overcome this with the improvement.
