New and Improved Meal Plans!

Voted Popular Blog Post: View All Popular Posts

Monday, December 28, 2009

We know that our members rely on the SparkPeople meal plans to learn how to eat better and stay within their calorie and nutrient ranges, and when you told us about improvements you'd like to see, we listened!

Today, we added new and improved meal plans to the site! As always, you can find meal plans by viewing your Nutrition Tracker. If you turned off your meal plans in the past, you'll have to click the button that says "Show Meal Plans" in order to see them. Here are some of the improvements you will notice:

  • An overall improvement in the quality and variety of the meals

  • Meals that better match up with our nutrition recommendations for carbohydrates, protein and fat. In the past, some of our meal plans were a little higher in carbs and lower in protein than we'd like. Our recommendations (50% carbs, 30% protein, 20% fat) haven't changed, but our new meal plans have been updated to better fit these requirements.

  • Directions for preparing meals. When we thought it wasn't clear how to prepare the foods listed in a meal, we added some short instructions, sort of like a mini recipe. Simply scroll over the word "Directions" next to the meal name (when applicable; not all meals will have directions) to learn how to cook or combine the foods into a meal.

If you have your meal plans turned on, you'll start seeing these new meal plans and directions the next time you view a new day or meal. This may sound confusing, so here's a short way to explain it: When you look at a day or grocery list that you have not looked at before, you will see new meal plans there.

We hope you enjoy these upgrades to our meal plans!

    Where are the meal plans?

I would like to be able to mix and match. Also, I would like to be able to plan my meals several days in advance in order to incorporate them into regular meals for the rest of my family.

We need something that is like a Chinese menu one from Column A and two from Column B!

This is such a great web site that I have faith in something like this working out.

The Nutrition Tracker is great! I could not make my appointment today so, I downloaded the past week and sent it as an attachment to my nutritionist!

If a checklist of foods that I actually eat was incorporated into meal plans prior to the suggestions I might use them. But I know that is too much programming for individuality.

Why can't I look at a bunch of meal plans? Why can I only see the one that shows up on my page for that day? What if that's not what I want to eat that day?

Is there a way to do your own meal planning? Where you can select receipes or your own and plan for the week? I would find that helpful.

Thanks so much.

I thought that meal plans *were* customizable, so I'm nto sure why people are saying that they want that feature. I remember checking a box for no dairy...

I wish you had menus specifically for diabetics so it isn't so hard for us to come up with things on our own.

Thanks for the efforts that have been made on this. But I still have to keep entering my own meal plans as I have an intolerance to several of the common items (particularly peanut butter).

I like the idea of meal plans, but like some others who have posted previously, I am lactose intolerant and would love to see an option to customize the meal plans to eliminate dairy products. Thanks.

I like the new meals, but yet would like it a little easier to find some of the other things that I frequently use and would like to be able to save them to the regular list of foods to make them easier to find in the future. Thanks for the great ideas though!!!!!

There are a lot of people on Spark with Celiac Disease or Gluten Intolerance - including me - it is very difficult to adjust any of the meal plans for this. Also very cumbersome to enter one's own, but I'm working on it. :) Someday Spark will offer a gluten-free option. Thanks for being here for all of us!

I love the idea of meal plans, but I am such a picky eater and on a very tight budget that it doesn't seem to be the best choice for me.

It's good to know that you are constantly improving/changing things to keep it up to date!

The meal plans have been invaluable in helping me to learn how to eat healthier. I am pleased with the new changes and really enjoy the addition of chef Meg's remakes also. It was time consuming in the begining to make the adjustment to using the meal planner and nutrition tracker but it is paying off and I notice that the more I do it the easier it seems to get, the less time it takes and I beleive I am at a point now that it actually saves me time! Thanks. Now if I can just stay consistent when I'm away from my computer I'll be fine lol.

I like the updates, but I am a vegetarian and lactose intolerant-therefore Vegan.
Could you please work on adding Vegan meals to the meal plans? (Maybe as a no dairy option) Thanks!

Happy New Year to all. I am looking forward to 2010. I received a Wii Fit Plus for Christmas and I think it will be a great tool for getting fit, which I need to do.

I'd love to see gluten free and dairy free options as I am not supposed to have either. So have to customize everything. I love that I can find gluten free recipes on spark people!

I am a natural born and raised redneck. My diet must be basic southern country with some cajun receipes. Any kind of high brow name turns me off. I have never had one of those prize winning haute gras dishes that was satisfying, adventursome but not satisfying. Are those dishes the only way to lose weight and be healthy ?

I second the comment about a no-dairy option. For those of us like myself who happen to be lactose intolerant and/or vegan, it's difficult to have to always replace the cheese/milk/yogurt options with non-dairy alternatives. Cheese alternatives especially are often less than appetizing. I and probably many other lactose intolerant and/or vegan individuals will probably have to stick to creating our own menus.

LEONALIONESS 12/31/2009 4:27PM

    Nice.

Darn, though, still no options to turn off dairy that I can find. Having the no-egg/no meat options are nice but there are a heck of a lot of vegans on Spark (and lactose intolerant/dairy allergic people) who'd benefit from a dairy-free option. It's really not necessary to have dairy in your diet and all the no-egg, no meat meals have copious amounts of dairy.

I'll stick with my custom stuff. The tracker works really well for all my odd foods. Heh.
The updates are certainly nice, though, and I hope they help a lot of people. :)
