This past year has been especially difficult. Early on, my precious Pocahontas died. She was my deaf "child" and as close to a baby as I'll ever have. I still miss her every single day.
The winter was pins and needles for my husband's job. He has been an engineer for General Motors for 30 years, but when it took bankruptcy, all bets on job security were off. He is still working, however, has taken a substantial pay cut. He says that job security still feels kind of "moment-to-moment."
I have had stomach issues for some time, and my health really deteriorated throughout the winter and spring of '09. After a number of tests, I had surgery. The surgery had complications, so I ended up spending part of the summer in the hospital. I have had countless x-rays, two CAT scans, an MRI, an endoscopy and a colonoscopy. The doctors still don't know why I feel nauseated and weak all the time. More tests are scheduled.
In the late summer, my father-in-law died. Although he and I were not especially close, I have known him since I was 15 years old. I am now 55. Watching my husband grieve this loss has been very difficult. He is the first-born son, and he and his dad were very close. Since his dad's death, my husband flies back to Kansas City to check in on his 80-year-old widowed mother on a regular basis. I'm happy that he is taking such good care of her, but I can tell that it is wearing on him.
As a result of all of the above, my husband surprised me with a winter vacation. We are leaving for the Sunshine State, Florida, tomorrow morning! I am delighted!!! This last year has been so difficult, and although we had a summer vacation scheduled, we didn't get to take it. We are both ready to get away from everything for awhile and bask in the warm sun. I am sooo looking forward to this! And I am so grateful to have such a loving, caring husband.
So, SparkFriends, since I don't know if I will have computer access for the next week, I may not be online until after the New Year. But know that I am with my wonderful husband getting some much-needed R & R. I am going to take this opportunity to wish all of you a happy holiday season and a Happy New Year!
