I'm 3 weeks into redoing the Couch to 5K program from coolrunning.com. Last year's Toys for Tots 5K was really enjoyable and I decided I wanted to run it again this year. It was not going to be pretty since I'm still walking/running. But it was for a good cause so I decided to just go for it and not worry.
Temps were in the mid-50's when the race started. When we lined up, I decided to get in the back so I would not hold anyone up. As I ran along, I quickly remembered how hilly the course was and my legs, especially my shins, were screaming at me. What was surprising to me was how strong I felt breathing wise. Leg pain caused me to walk portions of the race, maybe 40%, and if it were not for my legs not being conditioned again, I think I would have been able to run the whole race. My time for the race was 46 minutes. Savannah was able to run the kid race with her arm in its brace and enjoyed getting a medal. She proudly wore it most of the day.
This experience really made me be bit by the running bug again. I can't wait to run a 5K again, maybe the New Years Day 5K? I enjoyed running it last year.
My new goals:
1. Start placing more emphasis on strength training, especially on lower-body days.
2. I'm still not stretching enough and this will be fixed by devoting a couple days a week just for stretching sessions.
3. Diet, diet, diet (not going on a "diet") eating good, healthy foods, especially water-based foods.
4. Stronger emphasis on hydration, cutting out the diet soda.
5. Resume C25K next week.
