One of the things I love about vegetable deliveries from my CSA (Community Shared Agriculture) is that it introduces us to new vegetables we've never tried before. Still we couldn't help looking for a UFO when we saw this.

What is it? Some form of mutant broccoli or cabbage? It looks like an alien egg. I can hear the twilight zone music starting up even now...

Wow - never have seen that before your blog. I'm glad you have identified it. LOL. I've always wanted to get a share at a CSA. I'd probably have to do a 1/2 a share though since my hubby and daughter are sooo particular about the veggies they eat. I'm usually up for anything - even your alien veggie. I mean romanesco brocolli.

Irie named it correctly: romanesco brocolli!

According to my research it can be cooked in regular dishes that call for brocolli, but it is supposed to have a more delicate flavor. It is also supposed to be good for crudites.

I think that crudites is how I want to go with this. It is so beautiful, I want to preserve its spirals!

PS Aside to Geodawg: I am not a complete locavore, but I find that purchasing a share in a CSA each year allows us to enjoy fresh local and organic produce for a much lower cost than buying them in the store.

And there is so much of it, you just have to eat more vegetables as a part of your diet than you might otherwise. The variety is great, too!

Plus there is the added fun of "What the heck is it?" moments like this one.

If it does not bit you first, eat it! Have you read Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver? All about eating food from your own area. Is that what you are doing?
