I finally got to try exercising my knee today. It's felt better for the last two days so I decided to go for it and see how I'd do with continuing my C25K training. What makes it interesting is that I totally changed things out today. I've been doing all my training at the gym on a treadmill but today was Such a beautiful day that I decided to run outside. Talk about a difference! I loved being outside listening to nature while I was running/walking. I had planned on using my Ipod with one of the training podcasts I found but darned thing was dead so I ended up just listening to nature while I ran. What a beautiful melody that was!
The other interesting change I made was that I bought another pair of shoes. If you've read my blog entries at all you'll remember that I had recently gone to a shoe store and done all the right things re: getting fitted for running shoes. Had my foot measured, they watched my gait and my running stride and recommended several different pairs of shoes. The first time I ran in those shoes my knee was hurt and I've not been able to exercise for the past 2 weeks. Well, I've been doing alot of research and finally decided that perhaps there's something to the info I've been reading about "barefoot running." As I've said before, I don't plan on running barefoot but I did buy a pair of shoes that are considered "barefoot alternatives." (Vibram Five Fingers KSO) Believe it or not, my feet, legs and knees feel fine after doing W2D3. Now, my knee is a little sore but certainly less so than it was the last time that I ran. Even more interesting? I did a total of 3.7 miles!
I know, some may say that I did too much. However, I was good. I did my 5 minute warm up and then followed the program exactly for my total of 20 minutes of walk/run sequence. I continued the rest of my route by walking briskly and no running and I was shocked to find out that I had not only done more than a 5K distance wise but did almost 4 miles! I'm used to doing more cardio than just 20 or 25 minutes so it certainly wasn't pushing myself to do the time with my cardio. I can't wait to see how I do with increasing my running time!
