Enough Already .....

Thursday, November 19, 2009

When was the last time you had good, sincere thoughts about someone who is always unkind to you? We all know someone that we keep at arms length because of all the negativity that spews from them. Lots of times we can ignore them but we don't really channel good thoughts in their direction.

Which brings me to this .... why is it that so many people are downright hateful when describing themselves? They will post a 'before' picture and talk about that person as if they had no right to exist, much less be happy. Why would we want to do something nice for ourselves (like making permanent lifestyle changes) when we treat ourselves so badly.

How can we possibly make lasting changes in our lifestyle if we hate who we are right now and will only approve of ourselves when we are 'perfected'?

I'm on this journey because I want a healthy lifestyle and I want permanent change. But ... and this is so important ... I want to enjoy the journey. I don't want to let myself down because I like who I am and what I am becoming!

I believe that when we are kind to others they respond with kindness ... same goes for how we treat ourselves. Let's spend one day treating ourselves to encouragement and respect and see how much further that takes us on our path to becoming the best that we can be.

Awesome blog! You are so right that we are often most unkind to ourselves!

Thanks.

I always tell people the reason I work out so hard is because it destresses me. I enjoy it! It is something I need in my life which makes it so much easier to do everyday then looking in the mirror and hating what I see. I still sometimes fall into that mindset but not as often as I used to. Sparkpeople has really made me move past the self hate and onto bigger and better things. This was an amazing blog and a wonderful point.

Good thoughts! What we say to and about ourselves does matter. A verse in the bible says "Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear it". I think that not only applies to how we speak to others but to ourselves. We can speak truth to ourselves without being unkind and hateful.

Beautiful, Patricia! We are all deserving of self-love, yet it's a rare instance when we give it to ourselves. Somehow, we've been taught to lean more toward self-derision, and that is such a shame. Who knows what might happen if we actually gave ourselves the encouragement and respect you've mentioned here? Great post!

You have got that right. We wouldn't dare treat others the way we treat ourselves. Why do we think that is OK I wonder.

I wish more women had your attitude. All too often women put themselves down, before anyone else can. It;s like they are saying, "I know I'm ugly," or "I know I'm fat, but thanks for tolerating me anyhow." You are so right. WE have to start loving us and showing it. I think that if more women felt that way we would have far less weight problems since we would feel the need to drown problems in our food. Many women take better care of their clothes and jewelry than they do themselves.

I think that the people who like themselves and feel positively about themselves before starting a weight loss journey have a better chance at success too.

You stated some very true facts in your Blog. I was looking at a question that was on SPARKPEOPLE the other day, I cannot remember if a member asked it or not. Anyway, it said what do you hate about your body. I was thinking--nothing! Do I want to get healthy--yes! Do I want improvement--yes. Do I hate myself the way I am-no. I was and am made in God's Image so I am worth alot as we all are! I have noticed negative names also and I don't think it is right. I want to enjoy my journey also. Thank You for posting your blog!
GOD BLESS!
Louise
