The grass is always greener...

Wednesday, November 18, 2009

Well, I have changed my major yet again. I decided I am going to go for LPN and from there take LPN to RN mobility. I still hope I can open my own healthy cafe sometime but I just can't see that as possible making what I do now. I've always had quite an interest in health, anatomy, biology... so I figured it would at least pique my interest. We are also seriously considering moving out-of-state. It is tough being a city girl and moving to a small-town. When I was bored in Grand Rapids, I could just go to the mall and wander around for hours, visit the zoo, museums, hit the ropes course, bike down a trail, go snowboarding, ice skating, go to the movies, heck... I could just check out a new restaurant. And all the downtown activities like Celebration, Festival, Blues, etc. I figured there would be more time to do things because it doesn't get nearly as cold as Michigan. Wrong! So far as I gathered, the only things that people do for fun around here is grocery shop, gossip, and get drunk. So not my style! We're thinking of moving down to Pensacola, Florida or perhaps even Colorado. Not to say that I'm not happy I moved here, I definitely got a new perspective, not to mention tied the knot with my sweetie and met some interesting people, but there is nothing here that can really hold our interests. Which is another reason I think nursing would be a great fit for me, no matter where I go, my services will be needed. I can be nomadic with that career until I find a place to settle down. =)

Thanks so much for the tips! I didn't know that they had full scholarships available. I will definitely check that out! Yeah, I'm definitely going to a community college to get my training. I had some friends who were burned by the Olympia-type schooling and the degrees at home program so I want to make sure I get my training from a place with good accreditation. =)

Hi! As a nurse and nursing instructor for 4 decades, you sound like you would be a wonderful addition to the field! Choose your school carefully, though, because the education isn't universal across the country. You can become a registered nurse in 2 years through a technical nursing program (usually a community college) -- LVN/LPN training takes about a year. If you are serious about working as a full-fledged practitioner, I would recommend going into the RN program. You can become a CNA (certified nursing assistant) after the first clinical class and also become an intern at a hospital after you learn the basic skills. There are lots of restrictions placed on LPNs, even though they do wonderful work. Since there is such a shortage of nurses these days, you can usually get full scholarships for the RN programs. Through my career I have done all types of nursing and there are always jobs available. I started out working on a medical/surgical unit at a Catholic hospital, did home health nursing, took hospice training, did school nursing, worked on a graduate degree in public health education, did hospice nursing, worked as a discharge planner (a combo-job of being a social worker and nurse), taught full-time in an LPN program, taught clinical and labratory classes in several RN programs, finished a graduate degree in gerontological nursing, worked for a physician, worked in rural hospitals doing every type of nursing, did cancer nursing, tried working in an endoscopy unit and also a neurological ward, and now do volunteer work for a health dept. and the arthritis assn. Talk to a guidance councilor about the goals you have and your interests. Wishing you the very best as you embark on your career path! Welcome to the Mixed Mutt group -- we are so happy to have new members! Blessings, Lennie from SC
