Work Politics

Friday, November 13, 2009

Okay, I was inspired to write this entry because of what I'm currently going through. I've been trying to set up lunch for some fellow co-workers, you know, to mingle, network, and just have fun. Well, two out of five of the folks in the group don't get along. It's a guy and a girl. So we have to have two seperate lunch dates. These two people have to work together because they are in the same office and perform the same job. But they can't eat together? This may sound sexist, but I've never heard of guys taking it to that extreme. Ladies yes, guys not really. Most guys just suck it up and network. At least, that's been my experience. I don't think I dislike anyone so much at work that I would give up a networking opportunity. And I REALLY dislike one or two people here. But if it's a group lunch, then why not suck it up? I guess if personalities clash that bad, there's just no other way around it. It's just an interesting observation.

So now I'm here trying to make reservations and contact folks, and one person can't know about the other. Or at least, WHY there will be two seperate lunch dates, for fear of hurt feelings and maybe retribution. Or at least snide remarks. Sigh. Work politics are a funny thing :)

Don't you feel like you work in kindergarten some days? I know I do. We have one employee who really shouldn't be here anymore. She argues with her boss whenever she is asked to do anything. Or she'll claim she doesn't know how to do it when she's been shown millions of time how to do it. I work at a university and you have to go through so many steps before you can fire someone. So they are coming down hard on her for everything. Then she brings up we'll so and so does this, or so and so doesn't do that. So we're all being watched like hawks. Most of us work hard and don't even take our breaks. I feel like I'm back in high school and it's completely ridiculous. I'm glad to know that my office isn't the only one!
