The other night one of my clients/friends who is a PE teacher at one of the local elementary schools emails me to let me know she has volunteered me for a committee that has been requested by our school's Superintendant.
Apparently, the "professional" who is in charge of the ENTIRE district's meal planning is giving a discussion on the foods they prepare. She starts out by saying that our children's meals at school, breakfast AND lunch, are all 75% carbohydrates. My girlfriend raises her hand to make SURE she has heard the info correctly. Yes 75%....and they can't figure out why our kids are being listed as OBESE. My friend has tracked her kids from kindergarden and each year they come back heavier and heavier. What is the issue, and is the school system contributing to the bad health and obesity in our youngsters? Well with these statistics she is presenting I would say a definite YES especially since the guidelines recommend 45%-65% of a kiddos meals come from carbs. Here are a few more things this "professional" also says...this is listed from a handout she gave to all the attendees:
1. Hyperactivity is not caused by sugar or large amounts of carbohydrates ingested. It is a behavioral issue.
2. Sugar intake has NEVER been linked to any negative health impact, including obesity.
3. Sugar makes many nutirent-rich foods taste better so children will eat them.
#3 was the kicker for me! WHAT..you are kidding me right?! So dump some sugar on some cauliflower and our kids will eat it..and it's not a CONTRIBUTING factor to childhood diabetes or obesity??!!!! I think this woman has been living on another planet or had her head shoved.............
I have been doing really well saying NO to any volunteer work other than Girl Scouts. I just spread myself too thin leaving my hubby with very little US time, but with this ignorance hurting SO many of our little ones including my own, I just feel I can't turn my back on my chance to make a HUGE impact on so many lives. It is amazing that a so called professional can stand in front of people and promote this type of eating and say it's okay. It's not hurting the children..but it is and you sound REALLY IGNORANT!
I had a long email conversation with Dominque Adair this morning. She is the nutritionist I certified with at the Dallas Mania , and we talked about 75% carbs coming from apples, oranges, whole grains affecting the body quite differently than mac and cheese, white bread, and pop tarts. But still overeating ANY food group is going to affect your weight. People outside our industry may not realize that, but this woman is supposedly a professional and should KNOW better.
I will begin compiling data and sites Dominique suggested for me to use. I just hope all this work DOES make a difference. If the district can do the right thing for the kid's health by providing HEALTHY breakfasts and lunches, then they will be one step closer to solving the obesity and health epidemic that is plaguing our little ones.
