Computer Problems

Thursday, November 12, 2009

My computer is slowly conking out. After doing everything possible to prolong it's life, it may last another day, week, or month. However, when it goes, that'll mean a temporary break with SP site. Sad, but true. Meanwhile, I'm working hard to step up my exercise program, limit my calories to my range, and be an overall good girl. Have a wonderful day.

Slowly conking out is better than quickly conking out! emoticon

I built the computer I'm on right now back in 2001. Since then, it has been a work in progress that the end of the road is just ahead. In 2002, I upgraded the 20 GB hard drive with a 120 GB Western Digital hard drive and put a nice fresh version of Windows 2000 Professional replacing the Windows ME that I originally built it with. At that time I also installed 1024 mb of DDR SDRAM replacing the 256 mb DDR that I built the system with.

In 2003 I added a dolby 5.1 sound card, surround sound stereo system, subwoofer and a DVD burner. I also added Windows XP Professional upgrade at that time (which I still use).

In 2004 my monitor took a dump...new monitor! My DSL modem also took a dump (got it for free from AT&T when I signed up for DSL service but they wanted $129 for a replacement) so I bought a Zoom DSL modem and also a new V.92 dialup modem for dialup backup. I also updraded my processor from 1gb to 2gb and a stronger fan to handle the increased heat from the higher processor.

2005 my motherboard couldn't handle all that heat and bit the dust. Got a new motherboard. I remember the day I was replacing it, Colleen walked in the office and saw all of the internal parts all over the desk and she said "Tim, face it...that computer is never going to work again!" I told her calmly, (looking over my glasses) not only will this computer work again, but I will be online before your Lifetime movie is over. She just chuckled and went back to the living room. Sure enough...I was back online in about 45 minutes.

2009 my 120 GB Western Digital hard drive gave up the ghost! Good thing I have all of my files backed up on burnable DVD's (do it weekly) so it wasn't that big of a deal. Went to the computer parts store and scored a used WD 120 gb HD for $50 and was back in business in no time flat.

I just did the compatibility check for Windows 7 and alas, some of my programs and hardware are NOT compatible. Rather than get a new motherboard (some stuff on it is compatible and some isn't) and a new sound card and stereo system (again, some components compatible, some not) I am going to break down and build a new system that is capable to handle Windows 7 64 bit.

All of the good things about being my own tech support person is that I don't have to call and get someone in Calcutta that speaks broken English trying to tell me what to do to fix my system emoticon

New computer systems aren't nearly as expensive as they were just a few years ago, so if you need one, just make sure you have your important files backed up and have at it! If you need a little assistance, just shoot me a spark mail! emoticon

Write everything down, just in case the computer crashes. Then, when you are back up and running, you'll have all your tracking on paper, at least! emoticon

Sorry to hear about the computer problems. I try to go to the library when I am off work and use theirs. Sometimes I can and sometimes i can't. I don't have one at home. It would take too much of my time. (lol) Like I don't have any to spare. We really don't want you to leave, we need you here to encourage us just as we encourage you. Star emoticon
