Lately I've had a tough time getting my exercise done in the evenings. It seems that there is always something else to do - grocery shopping, dishes, laundry, watch a movie, go out for karaoke with my peeps, or just go to bed early. I know that part of this is because of my BF's schedule. He has to be to work at 5am, so the alarm clock (my cell phone) gets set for 3:30. The problem is, he doesn't hear it, or at least not enough to wake him up completely. So I hit the snooze button, and 5 minutes later it goes off again. We do this until 3:45 or 3:50, at which point he says "I'm up" (and sometimes after that we go through one more snooze cycle)...
Once he's "up", he has to stretch. And I don't mean stretch lengthwise, I mean he lays on his back and rotates his legs, one at a time, to stretch & warm up his hip and thigh muscles. Seeing as we only have a queen size bed, and I take up almost half of it, his stretching causes his leg to bump into me with every rotation. So he finally gets out of bed, and proceeds with his morning rituals. One of these rituals is going to the laundry area to get his clothes (our closet is tiny, so half of our clothes are in the laundry room), which he brings back to the bedroom and tosses onto my feet. Just as I'm going back to sleep. Then he goes outside to start his Blazer - wouldn't be an issue, except he slams both the kitchen door and the screen door, on his way out and on his way back in. Back in he comes, hops in the shower, at which point I really finally get back into a good sleep. But alas, when he's done in the shower, he sits on the edge of the bed (my side) where my feet should be (I've moved them out of his way, usually!) to put on his socks. Then he gets dressed, kisses me goodbye, and slams the doors again.
At this point, I usually go back to sleep, and get up around 6:15. This schedule is killing me! I feel like I'm tired all the time. So I was browsing the internet the other day, and found a gym close to my house that has a 10 day free trial. I checked their hours, and lo and behold, they open at 5am. Since I don't have to be to work until 8, this would give me ample time to workout, eat breakfast, take care of the doggie's needs, get my DGOTD announcement sent out, and get ready for work. But the question in my head is "can I really get out of bed and drag my a** to the gym at 5am?"
So the last few days, I've been going to bed between 8-9pm, which means no exercise. I get home from work at 5:30, fix dinner, relax for a bit, and usually by around 8 my food has digested enough that I can exercise with no problem. I'd exercise right after work, but BF has to eat early, otherwise his acid reflux acts up when he goes to bed. So I usually workout sometime between 8-10. But since I've been going to bed early, I've been trying to adjust my internal clock so that I won't have a problem getting out of bed at 4:30, when honey leaves for work. Tuesday, I tried really, really hard, but went back to sleep and got up at 6. 15 minutes earlier than usual, but still not enough time to exercise. I mean really, it takes me 30-40 minutes to get the DGOTD stuff done, unless I've done it ahead of time (and I'm lazy, so that never happens...). Wednesday, I managed to get up at 5:30. Much better, but I still wasn't quite awake enough to workout. I did manage to find a few days worth of DGOTD candidates, so I'm semi-prepared for the next week, and the early morning was not a total write-off. I also had time to curl my hair and shave my legs, which is a wonder in itself!
This morning, I got out of bed at 4:40. Ate a bowl of cereal, did my DGOTD announcement, fed the dogs, let them outside to do their thing. Then I started a download of an antivirus update, checked my email, started to browse Facebook. At 6:00, I said to myself - stop procrastinating! You're up, take advantage of this time! So I put on my workout clothes, HRM and headphones, grabbed a water bottle and headed out to the garage. That's where my workout equipment is (remember my comment about my "tiny closet" - apply it to the entire house, I think we have about 450 -500 square feet). Anyway, Brrrr!!! Part of the reason I was so reluctant - it's COLD out there! So I turned on my little safety space heater, hopped on the treadmill, and grabbed my 2lb weights. 30 minutes on the treadmill, with 200 reps of misc upper body exercises while walking. Then 20 minutes on the HealthRider, with emphasis on abs & back muscles. I did it! I worked out in the morning!
So next week I'm going to try the 10 day free pass at the gym, now that I know I can actually get up and get moving. Once I've tried the gym for 10 days, I will have to decide if I can afford the expense, or if I will have to just suck it up and workout in my cold garage through the winter. Luckily, the gym has trial memberships available, 3 days a week for 1/2 the price.
