Turning goals into healthy lifestyle habits.

Thursday, November 05, 2009

I wanted to write a little about something I've been doing that I think is actually working well for me. With over 30 years of dieting and failing under my belt I've always wondered what my life would have been like if I had begun this practice at an early age. I have thought about this so many times and now I'm actually giving it a try.

What if, instead of dieting I picked one healthy goal to work on for 30 days? I've read so much about how long it takes to turn a goal into a solid habit. So, I figure if I put all my energy and focus into that one thing consistently for 30 days, then just maybe I could actually keep on doing it until it became so natural that it eventually turned into a solid healthy lifestyle habit. And I believe my body would then lose the weight naturally as I add more and more healthy habits.

So far I've accomplished one goal and almost a 2nd. one ~

1) I've quit using pot and alcohol and it'll be 60 days on the 9th.
2) I gave up sugar and it'll be 30 days on the 9th.
3) Now I'm about to begin a walking goal.

Although I'm going to keep each habit going, I'm going to want to adjust some of them as I go. After the 9th. I'm going to adjust my sugar goal to allow myself a sugary dessert on special occasions only. But it has to be a special occasion such as a holiday or birthday celebration and I've got to apply portion control. I'm still not going to buy any of my old binge foods, nor am I going to bring any of that stuff in my house. At least not until I know I have the urge to eat it conquered. And that's going to take a very long time. I'm just going to deal with one special occasion at a time and on Thanksgiving I'm going to treat myself to some dessert and then walk away and leave the rest for someone else to take home.

This may sound a little silly, but I don't care. If it works for me that's all that matters. I bought myself a nice ring binder for "My Recovery" and I'm going to put lots of cool, motivational stuff in it. Yesterday I bought some paper at walmart that looks like a blank certificate. And when I got home I created a masterpiece of a certificate for each 30 day goal I turn into a healthy lifestyle habit. It looks so professional and cool, I wish I could share it here. Hey, maybe I can take a picture of it and add it later. I'll try.

Congratulations on your new habits. I have often in the past, shared your regret when looking back at wasted time. Today I look at the regret as just another waste of time!

My experience is though, I pick up bad habits really easily, but I pick up good habits really slowly!

So 4 years sober, 3 years of excercising regularily, going on 7 months without smoking and an improved excercise program, and now in my first week of trying to have prayer and meditation be a daily practice rather than an on again, off again affair.

Thank the HP that the program says Progress not Perfection, I'm slowly picking up good habits, but if I tried to do everything I should do today it would be a hopeless task. One day at a time and do the next right thing....

All the best, sounds like you are doing great!
