The 6'2 Leprechaun

The day before Halloween I asked my 17 yr. old son , Daniel "What is it you want to be for Halloween this year"? This all felt rather vague to me...we're in the throws of applying to colleges, and finishing his BSA Eagle badges, and school papers, and the last week of Marching Band...etc. Halloween was way down the list.
He said: I want to be a Leprachaun, and Chris is coming over to put on theatre make-up me. Can we go get a costume?". My first thought was that I have a basket we can cover in green foil (and there's some of that up with the wrapping paper!), and we can buy some of those gold leafcovered chocolate coins at the supermarket....I've got that covered....Then, I thought , buy a costume? ...the day before Halloween?....(we had a short but sweet conversation about doing things last minute...!)
So we head to Party Depot....he's sure there is something there....he goes in, and I stay in the car to read, because I'm sure there's nothing there.....but he's in there a long time???.....so I go in....
Well, there WAS something there....a friend (of the female sort) from marching band and they talked and talked and talked....so I got him out of there, and I'm thinking: costume, costume, Leprechaun?, ?..... so we go over to the other party store (I humor him a lot - but he's my last...) (Ok....I said a lot....ugh...)
...and it's a few doors down from the fabric store!!! Wow!....I'll just go in and look.....
Well, the Simplicity patterns were only $1.99, The fabric was on sale for $4.89/yd...it was bright green satin.....what else could I do??
I had such fun! I made pants (unisex nurses elastic waist), a vest(formal, 4 button), a tie(I'd made them before for my brothers-in-law, when I was about 15 - they were good sports! LOL), and a hat (this I had to be inventive with...complete with cardboard cut out brim!) He got to the party more like at 7 instead of 6, but he was a hit!
My DH says this is early empty-nesting hitting hard, but he helped...he ironed the tie (he should know how a tie should turn out, right?), while I sewed on the brim of the hat... What a guy...I think he's right about the empty nesting though. And Daniel isn't leaving for college for another 10 months!! Oh boy....But, it WAS fun!
