Board Certified by Coca-Cola!

With Halloween approaching and these recent events in the news we cannot just sit back and do nothing. We must stop the destruction of our children.

The American Academy of Family Physicians has announced a corporate sponsorship with Coca-Cola and is also accepting an undisclosed amount of money from them as well.

The AAFP today announced a corporate partnership with The Coca-Cola Co., in which the beverage giant will provide a grant for the Academy to develop consumer education content related to beverages and sweeteners for the AAFP's award-winning consumer health and wellness Web site, FamilyDoctor.org.

According to the Kansas City Business Journal, Coca-Cola is providing a grant of an unspecified amount to the AAFP for the project.
Now it comes full circle. The drug industry manipulates and controls the drug information given to doctors and now soda companies fund the nutrition information. Good work guys! Even if the AAFP changes their mind due to public outcry it won’t be enough for me. They need to clearly state publically that drinking soda has been a significant contributor to the epidemic of overweight, heart disease and cancer in this country and is disease and death promoting. It is designed to be addicting and serving it to children is child abuse. What if the AAFP accepted funding from Phillip Morris and promoted smoking in moderation?

P.S. Just in case you didn’t know, the American Dietetic Association, the organization that certifies nutritionists and dietitians, also accepts money from Coca-Cola, as well as PepsiCo, Kellogg’s, General Mills, Mars and the National Dairy Council.

I know this was written awhile ago, but I thought I would give my input on this. I agree that when large corporations fund things it should make us wary of the results but at the same time I believe that funding needs to come from somewhere. Maybe we can convince the companies that it's in their better interest to fund things so that they can change their products to better suit the results as opposed to changing the results to suit the products?

unfortunately they do not get paid to be honest. This is why we need to advocate self education in this area. We need to start taking responisibility as wives, mothers, parents, etc. and do the research on our own. We cannot trust that these organizations have our best interest at heart. emoticon

I'd like these industries to be more closely monitored. Both of them! We're trusting them with our health for goodness sake. The least they could do is be honest with us as consumers. That may be too much to ask however!

Thanks for sharing - information is power!

Interesting article. No different than just about any other organization out there. It's all about the money. It's a shame that these organizations feel that taking money from companies that contribute the the obesity epidemic is ok and acceptable. IT'S NOT OK TO SELL YOUR SOUL FOR A DOLLAR!!!!
