Rainy Day Training

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

It's been raining here in Missouri. Last week we had about three straight days of rain, and, with just a couple of days of relief, the rain has set in again this week. That means my running has head indoors.

Take today for instance. I was just about to head out for my 5 miler. Actually, I had just finished my stroll around the block that I take for a warm up, when the drops started falling. A quick change had me in the minivan and off the the gym. What we had signed up for as a cold weather option for training has actually come in handy over the past few days. In fact 3 of my four last runs were indoors.

Now, I certainly don't have a love affair with the treadmill. I'd much certainly rather have the wind in my hair and the streets of my neighborhood running by instead of watching the talking heads of the news programs, but I'll take the endorphins in whatever way I can get them. And getting my run done in the morning certainly beats watching the skies and wishing the rain away.

How about you? Have rainy days forced you indoors? How do you cope with mother nature's finicky nature this time of year?

I've just started running since May and have yet to move indoors yet for my runs (instead I skip them and get cranky.)

I remember running on a treadmill growing up and HATING it so I'm afraid if I move it indoors to a treadmill, what once was a wonderful fun thing that I love to do will turn into the drudgery and loathing it used to be.

I'm thinking of finding a place with an indoor track - maybe that would be the best of both worlds? Because right now the weather in NC is just not cooperating either!
