Spreading the Spark FAIL!

Wednesday, October 07, 2009

Well, after successfully spreading the Spark with my family and friends over the past several weeks, I assumed that I was ready to spread my wings in public. While I ultimately did get to spread the Spark message today, it was at the cost of a faux pas.

This afternoon, when I went to have lunch at a local take out place called "Zoup," I took the advice of Spark and researched the online nutritional information before I left. That worked out really well for me because as soon as I arrived, I already knew what I was going to order. In line ahead of me, a customer was trying to make a decision on which soup to choose and she asked me which one was my favorite. I told her while the Lobster Bisque was my favorite, I was going to choose the Shrimp and Crawfish Etouffee because when I looked up the nutritional information online, I found out that my Lobster favorite had twice as many calories and three times the fat! She was impressed that Zoup had the nutritional information online and told me that two of her employees were on Weight Watchers and they would find that information useful.

Yes! A genuine opportunity to spread the Spark! We talked for a few short minutes about the Spark website before she gave the cashier her order. Then, after she had finished paying for her order, I handed her one of those Spark business cards that we can print out for just such an occasion! But, here's the faux pas - she looks at it hard for a second and then hands it over to the cashier saying, "Isn't this nice!" And, I'm thinking, "Wow, she's already spreading the spark!" OMG! NO! She thinks that I've just handed her a Zoup discount card! Okay, NOW it's AWKWARD! As the three of us back-tracked and stumbled over our words, she states that she'll pass the card to her employees.

And the next time I'm looking for an opportunity to spread the Spark, I'll make sure my timing is better!

I'm very proud of you!
This does have a comical ending and one that I'm sure you will look back on in the future.

Keep up the good work! emoticon

Oh well. You tried. She didn't sound real receptive.

You get an A for trying even if it did turn out kind of awkward.

In the end, it was kind of comical. But like you, I did look at it as a situation where someone would eventually end up "needing" the card and be lead to Spark.

Haha, that was a kind of hard thing to see coming though! One of those comedy of error things, I would have done it the same way you had. Your doing great about wanting to tell people though. Don't get too discouraged if others aren't as excited as we are ourselves. I've been screaming from the hill tops and haven't seen much return (although I am seening online workout buddies are just as good as real life ones!) On a positive note though I tweeted about how I was doing on sparkpeople and sparkpeople themselves messaged me AND followed me! So I didn't get more people excited but at least sparkpeople takes care of me! LOL

I don't see that as a fail but more like an oops my face is red. But then not just one person got to see the card but several. Who knows how much of a spark might be spread because of it. I like to take the Pollyanna view & think that somehow that cards makes its way to a person who needs it most. Don't sweat it...it was still a good move you made!
