I remember back in 2007 when I was training at the gym with my personal trainer and I asked him..."Hey, whatcha doin this weekend" and he said.."Oh, I'm doing the Chicago Triathlon"...I replied, "Oh I would LOVE to do a Tri one day"....and well....I can finally say that I'm a Triathlete, ME...YES!!!!
It was mid June 2009 and I said to myself...Adriana, its now or never..you can do this and by the end of the day I had signed up for the Danskin Triathlon. There was no turning back now..I had to start training and training HARD! The running and biking I had down...but the swim scared me...880yds! Thats 1/2 a mile...can I really do that? I started chatting with my Fellow Triathletes looking for a great training program and my friend Nitro told me about Trinewbies.com, I checked it out and I said Oh yes..this training program is definetly for me! It was an 11 week program and it was for beginners, like myself. I started training July 6th and for the next 11 weeks I had to take every training day seriously! The was a committment and I couldnt let anything or anyone get in the way. I trained before work, afterwork on the weekends, etc. Though I did spend quite a bit of money...it was SO WORTH IT!
The Lake!..... Getting to the lake and the pool was a challenge for me. I wasnt scared of the water, just knowing that if I wanted to put my feet down in the lake..it wasnt going to be possible. I had to train my body, but most of all my mind. I was in the water about 3-4x a week and what a workout that was! Weeks 5-8 were BRICK workout weeks...this is where I had the most fun! I was a newbie and these workouts really kicked me butt, but I was all about training hard!
A few weeks leading into my 1st Tri, I began to get very nervous! Was I going to drown, fall off my bike, collapse on the running course..I even had dreams, ekk! I had been training for 10 weeks at this point and if I was doing good so far..I shouldnt worry, right? I took a breather and went for a run...as I was running, I began to shed a few tears...Tears of joy, that is. In just 2 weeks I was going to be doing a Triathlon! Never in a million years would I have even thought to myself that I could train for this...but NEVER say NEVER...this wasnt a dream, I was really living this!
1 week away...it was getting down to the wire, I was pumped and ready to go...I took the last week of training very easy, I didnt wanna push it so much. Got in a last swim on Thursday and I was good to go, packed all my gear and headed for Pleasant Prairie, WI that saturday morning.
Got to the hotel...unpacked, set aside gear for the morning and went to pickup my packet, racked my bike...set my things up at my transition area and the best part was getting my body markings, I was so pumped by this time!! We all headed back to the hotel.. had dinner with my family, went shopping and then went to sleep...this was going to be my last night as a Tri Virgin!! lol Got up at 530am...took a shower and got suited up in my wetsuit and had my "Breakfast of Champions" and headed towards the course! I wasnt going to be getting into the water until 7:46am...so I had sometime to snap some pix with the family, with Monica and of the Lake! I was in WAVE 17 and Monica took off in Wave 11. Getting up to the gate I thought I'd be nervous, but I had sometime before the swim to get into the lake and feel the water...it was so warm! That made me even more excited haha. I got in with my Wave and was at the Swim Start..this was it for me...No Turning Back! lol Gun went off and I was in the water...oooweee!!! I kid you not... I thought I was in the lake for days lol...but when I got my time...I was in the lake for 00:24:45, OMG!!!!! I couldnt believe it, wooohooo!!! I kicked @ss! Then I got outta the water...ran to my transition area for T1...got my gear off, put on my biking gear and took off! It was a long 12.5 miles, but I made it back alive. The road was a bit rocky, hilly and deserted, but I had to keep my eye on the prize. 00:52:46 minutes later..I was back for transiton #2 and got my bib #, changed shoes and got my butt on the running course. (by this time my legs were SHOT! lol) Running is my thang, but it took me 00:40:37 minutes to run a 5k...but aint NO SHAME in that! hehe I was getting close to the end, I could almost taste it! As I was running, I could hear people chanting "LETS GO 1624"!!! I also couldnt believe how much love Wisconsin had for CPD, yahhhoo! lol I was honored to have represented the CPD Triathlon Team, cant wait to train with all you guys soon. :)
As I was crossing the finish...everything that I worked so hard for was leading up to this! I did it!!!!!! 2:08: BABY!!!! Ohhhh what a FEELING!!! I'm a Triathlete, :::crying::::
