Diversity and Tolerance

Quotations on the difference in us.

Bernice Johnson Reagon
There is nowhere you can go and only be with people who are like you. Give it up.

Felix Adler
People may be said to resemble not the bricks of which a house is built, but the pieces of a picture puzzle, each differing in shape, but matching the rest, and thus bringing out the picture.

John F. Kennedy
If we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity.

Lillian Hellman
Since when do you have to agree with people to defend them from injustice?

Madame de Stael
Wit lies in recognizing the resemblance among things which differ and the difference between things which are alike.

Mark Twain
It were not best that we should all think alike; it is difference of opinion that makes horse races.

Mohandas K. Gandhi
I do not want my house to be walled in on all sides and my windows to be stiffled. I want all the cultures of all lands to be blown about my house as freely as possible. But I refuse to be blown off my feet by any.

Martin Luther King Jr.
Human salvation lies in the hands of the creatively maladjusted.

Mohandas K. Gandhi
It is the duty of every cultured man or woman to read sympathetically the scriptures of the world. If we are to respect others' religions as we would have them respect our own, a friendly study of the world's religions is a sacred duty.

Pearl S. Buck
We send missionaries to China so the Chinese can get to heaven, but we won't let them into our country.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
In the matter of religion, people eagerly fasten their eyes on the difference between their own creed and yours; whilst the charm of the study is in finding the agreements and identities in all the religions of humanity.

Rene Dubos
Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue; it makes it a requirement for survival.

Robert F. Kennedy
Ultimately, America's answer to the intolerant man is diversity, the very diversity which our heritage of religious freedom has inspired.

Thomas Paine
My country is the world, and my religion is to do good.

Spark People is surely a gathering place for diversity. That's why I like it here.

Funny you should blog about diversity. This is one of my biggest belief's (in addition to teamwork). I lead the Diversity Team for two solid years, in one of my jobs. What I tried to get everyone to understand is diversity means many things, but the most important thing we can take from it is, we don't have to agree with everyone's viewpoints/opinions, but you should respect the fact that they have something they believe in and want to share with you.

Too many people think someone is a "Know It All" because they voice a different opinon. Myself, I respect their opinons, not always agreeing, but I respect that they trusted me enough to share their knowledge with me. I generally ask questions, about the subject, that way I can learn from them.

Thanks Karen, this is a very very important mess you sent. emoticon

Great quotes. Loved the Thomas Paine one.

You are so right about SparkPeople being diverse. We all have different paths that we must take, no one journey is the right one for all. It is wonderful when we can find some light amongst the path.
