Status Update: Powerful Motivational Tool!

Tuesday, September 15, 2009

I discovered something today about the "status update" feature here at SparkPeople. I have always thought of it as something fairly trivial...like "I'm feeling ____ " or "Today I did ____" Ho hum...

However today when I realized that tomorrow an early morning dental appointment was going to de-rail my usual morning treadmill session and I knew I was going to be working till 9:30 I thought: hmm...I'd better double up on my treadmill time today to make up for this!

Well that's a good thought with good intentions, however if I leave it to the realm of mulling it over it's a very easy thing to just blow it off.

However when I go "public" announcing on my status update that I'm going to do something...

How can I NOT?!?! :-)

I couldn't LIVE with myself if I said I was going to do something and just wussed out and was a slug all night!

So now I know...if I TRULY want to follow through on something I'll just have to announce it in my status update...! I've already had others cheering me on wishing me well on my doubling up on my cardio...so...

Let's crank it up and get 'er done!

Which I already have...woo hoo!

Now I'm pushing the envelope on SLEEP!

Nite all! :-)

So very true. I haven't thought about posting what I am going to do before, just what I have done. Maybe I should do that when there is something I should be doing... like taking the kids to the zoo ... by myself ... and not going crazy ... when they go crazy .... Shudders in fear! Deep breathe in, deep breathe out, deep breathe in, deep breathe out.

It's like having a little guilt out there yelling to the world what you're doing! I think it puts it to good use!! :) I grew up with Italian guilt, I might as well have SP guilt too! LOL

Good idea! I usually post my status after I've accomplished something, but I like the idea of using it for motivation. Thanks for the blog.

The status updates are a wonderful tool, for whatever the day brings. You've creatively used it for motivation! That's great, Don. I don't remember that page when I first joined, whether it just went unnoticed or SP later started it. Given our busy days, it's a super way to stay in touch with one another and cheer from the sidelines - as I did your double cardio! Have a great day.

Tee hee, absolutely! I find that I do the same thing when I post it to a team... if say I'm going to do something... dang it, I have to do it! Love the accountability features all over the place.

This is so true. I made the mistake of saying that I was developing a walking habit and then I HAD to walk this evening even when I didn't want to. Keep up the good example.
