If At First You Don't Succeed...

Sunday, September 06, 2009

Yes, us northerners must re-invent ourselves when the colder weather comes along!

Last winter I tried cross country skiing for the first time and was a bumbling, fumbling mess! My balance is SO POOR! This winter...?

Sigh...I guess I keep at it and try again...lol! Can't throw in the towel JUST yet...!

Beyond this? My 'millwork and outdoor walks / jogs continue unabated! :-)

You go, Don! As a teen, my first ski trip was possible because my aunt loaned me skis. Turns out they were cross country skis, and I was taking downhill lessons. I kept trying, too - but with the right equipment. LOL

    Good luck and keep trying!

I have run through a Binghamton winter outside (before I got my treadmill) and it is "possible" - but not a ton of fun LOL! I got a Gore Tex outfit and layers, layers, layers and even at about 5 below was not too cold. I did really like running during a snowfall (on side streets only to be safe, not out on the road) - it was so quiet most of the time you could hear each flake falling...

So, there are options if the ski thing doesn't work out - but XC skiing sound like way more fun! I did it once when I was in HS, but I lived in IL then & there were NO hills, so fewer challenges to balance.

I suggest you get some Nordic trekking sticks and practice before the snow comes. The sticks raise your caloric usage 20-35% while doing normal walking, and really prep you for X country skiing. Honest! I love them for hill hikes and rough trails, but as prep for skiing, they can't be beat.
I loved X country skiing. Not too likely in Oakland, Ca these days. Have fun!
