From IdealBite.com ~ This tip on buying fresh produce.

“Are your fruits and veggies blessed with good genes? Peel your eyes off the silver screen and check the number on the little label on your apple or squash. It'll help you make sure what you're buying is organic and non-genetically modified. Kind of a big deal.”

“Look for the PLU codes on the labels stuck on your fruits and veggies.
A four-digit number means it's conventionally grown.
A five-digit number beginning with 9 means it's organic.
A five-digit number beginning with 8 means it's genetically modified.”

How fabulous to head to my store with this knowledge!

Thank you so much for sharing this info with us :)
I'm going to check out the codes next time I'm shopping and I'm going to check the codes for the produce I have now.
I'm from Canada as well, and I'm sure it must be the same here as in the US as a lot of our produce come from the States.
NO # 8 produce for me !!!!!!!!

Wow! I didn't know that! Thank you very much for sharing that information!

Thank you! I didn't know anything about the 8...Like Laserthecat said, maybe it's different here in Canada. In front of me there is an organic apple which number starts with a 9, and an organic mango... same thing. So it should be the same in canada than US. it makes sense because most of fruits we buy here are made in US.
thank you so much! I'm gonna check the number 8 now!! now way I'll eat transgenic produces without knowing it!

I just got home from the grocery store and checked out the numbers and it's true. Everything that was in the organic section was 5 digits starting with 9, the rest were 4 digits. I didn't see any 5 digits starting with an 8.
