I don't know about you, but I am always looking for new and interesting ways to add movement to my life (also known as exercise). I am not one of those folks who enjoy doing calisthenics. That is, of course, until you combine it with something to do with animals.
I don't always want to take a walk just for my own health, but put a furry creature on the end of a leash and I'm off and humming a happy tune! My husband even falls under this category. He will not walk for himself (unless the earth is moving beneath his feet while on a treadmill). However, if he thinks the horse needs exercise, he straps a halter on the horse and off they go. That 25 year old horse is worth his weight in gold as far as my husband's health is concerned.
We also have a pet duck, Ansel, and I recently realized that she has been helping me with my strength training. We have a daily ritual that we do together. I tag along and hunt for bugs with her. She loves this as I can turn over stones and pull bushes back for her to get better access. It dawned on me that as I have gotten stronger, I have been doing more deep knee bends
and squats with her every day.
Cleaning and feeding the "crew" has also added some additional strength
training. Now that I have been doing consistent strength training with my free weights, I can lift the horse's feed bucket and shovel the poop. I climb up and over his gate quite often during the day too.
Finally, there is the ball playing with Happy (another fitness assistant) which takes the form of both baseball pitching and soccer. He never gets tired and we never keep score but the game runs all day long, every day when I have a few minutes to play.
We do not have an Armadillo yet, but who knows, it could happen!
