For many of us, life has become a passive thing. You go about your daily activities, go home, eat dinner and watch TV then go to sleep. You see news stories about health care reform and all the falsehoods being spread by malicious, self-serving talk show hosts that cause those unruly town hall meetings and just cringe. You take it all in then feel disgusted and powerless.

Have you noticed that in today's journalism, as practiced on TV, whoever shouts the loudest must be telling the truth! The media is actually empowering these people to the point that they have a stronger influence on your life than any lobbyist or for that matter, any elected official.

How do you change this one-sided situation? ENGAGE!! If you see a news story that is clearly not telling the truth, call the offending TV station. Tell them of your displeasure. If they are repeatedly slanting the news, write or call the Federal Communications Commission and file a complaint. Most importantly, be your own lobbyist: contact your elected officials and tell them that they will only get your vote if they vote your way.

In the 1970's, I worked in radio in an on air talent capacity. Since then, I have worked in the technical side of broadcasting and then for other industries. After all these years, I am going to look for an air personality job on a talk radio station because that is how I intend to engage! Like many radio people, my on the air name is not my real name.

Engage, let your voice be heard!

Jack, I believe that those who yell the loudest are being heard and listened to especially by those who do not take the time to check out the issue or situation or maybe aren't really listening and don't want to hear of know the truth. If they know the truth, they don't want to rock the boat or stir the waters. They feel that they don't want to get involved. What a shame!!!
Keep your great blogs coming!!!

I think that more and more our nation as a whole is becoming more engaged. The problem now is educating them. We have young people who really are excited to vote, but they don't seem to know where to go to get reliable voting materials and information.

I agree and this concept works in a lot of settings. I am a staff development nurse and I teach the new orientations. I constantly use these terms engage and invest in other words CARE about your environment. Take ownership of your surroundings and if you see something out of order fix it. Offer suggestions and options for problems don't just complain. Know every inch of your area and intervene before things get out of control. I have also been trying to apply this to my lifestyle changes. I am now taking control of my nutrition and exercise and making better decisions. I am invested in my new health in other words I care about me.
