It Ain't Always Easy...!

Monday, August 10, 2009

Whew...! Don't know what it was this morning, but my treadmill session was the same as most mornings, only 35 mins. 4 mph, "9" incline...but today it seemed SO much more difficult than usual...! Felt like I was sweating twice as much and no matter how many songs I forwarded through, I just couldn't get in sync with the music on my mp3 player, which is usually what pulls me out of any doldrums I might have. I think the humidity and the upcoming 90 degree day might have gotten to me, even though the heat wasn't even noticeable this morning.

I did come across an old favorite of mine though. Just thought I'd share the lyrics. This song (best performed, in my opinion by either Nanci Griffith or Kathy Mattea, who puts a wonderful celtic spin to her version) along with John Lennon's Imagine are two of my favorite utopian visions:

From A Distance

From a distance the world looks blue and green,
and the snow-capped mountains white.
From a distance the ocean meets the stream,
and the eagle takes to flight.

From a distance, there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
It's the voice of hope, it's the voice of peace,
it's the voice of every man.

From a distance we all have enough,
and no one is in need.
And there are no guns, no bombs, and no disease,
no hungry mouths to feed.

From a distance we are instruments
marching in a common band.
Playing songs of hope, playing songs of peace.
They're the songs of every man.
God is watching us. God is watching us.
God is watching us from a distance.

From a distance you look like my friend,
even though we are at war.
From a distance I just cannot comprehend
what all this fighting is for.

From a distance there is harmony,
and it echoes through the land.
And it's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves,
it's the heart of every man.

It's the hope of hopes, it's the love of loves.
This is the song of every man.
And God is watching us, God is watching us,
God is watching us from a distance.
Oh, God is watching us, God is watching.
God is watching us from a distance.

I can't help but imagine what a different world we might have if all the debt America has incurred with our military pursuits had instead been placed toward

---developing a sustainable society with homes and healthcare for all

---finding, developing sustainable, renewable alternative energy sources

---shoring up our crumbling infrastructure

---providing lifelong quality education without requiring the incredible debt incurred by most college graduates

---generating employment through implementing above investments in infrastructure and alternative energy

---partnering and sharing with other countries knowledge gained in the above pursuits and becoming recognized worldwide as purveyors of peace and prosperity and sincerely welcomed throughout the globe

Just a pipe dream, I know...but as Lennon said:

"You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one"

I think we have begun to create a healthier, more positive community here at SparkPeople. To quote William Arthur Ward: "The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." We have SO many TERRIFIC "teachers" here at SparkPeople, offering one another such a TREMENDOUS amount of INSPIRATION!

Have a wonderful and SPARKING day everyone!

You have my vote! It sounds like some of your waning physical stamina was in your brain. A terrific commentary, inspirational, solid, passionate. I love that song, too. Haven't heard Kathy Mattea, and will look her up. A 9 incline! Wow, Don, .5 is a challenge for me. Plus your humidity and heat? I bow my head in respect and awe. By the way, I loved your description of sometimes using the treadmill in the dark. Very poetic and imaginative. (Your page background is beautiful. Both the sun's entrance and exit stops me in my busy-life tracks and center me with creation.

I second ROYALETBONE's comment. Heat AND humidity can really change my ability to perform physically. When the air is so full of moisture, there's less oxygen available...

(or at least, that's what I tell myself!)

Don't forget to replace all that liquid you're sweating out!

Heat sucks the energy out of us, with out a doubt...
Good reminders of the energy we can bring to this Spark world, Don.

GREAT blog! I LOVE this song! It's sooooo beautiful!

I had some difficulty with my walking this morning too and I put it down to the weather as well. I was actually huffing after my 3-mile walk...so it's in the 'air' darlin'! Tomorrow will be a better day!
emoticon Jazzy!!
