Goal Setting

I am often asked if I set goals for myself, and I always answer "yes." Except, I say, when I was obese. When I was obese I set all kinds of goals for myself, but not in terms of health. I just kept wishing that I could lose weight. I tried all different diets and programs, but none seemed to work for me. But one thing I didn't do was set specific goals for myself.

The last time I tried losing weight I did set some definite goals for myself in several different areas:

- Fitness Level
- Quality of Food I Was Eating
- Size
- Appearance
- Weight
- Energy Level

That time, I realized that losing weight wasn't good enough. I really wanted to gain other things this time. I wanted to gain back my self esteem, and show myself and others that I wasn't just the fat girl holding up the wall.

I wanted to run and play with my kids, fully participating in their lives and in their activities.

I wanted to look better physically.

All these smaller, specific goals really helped keep me motivated as I was on my journey. I'd encourage you, if you haven't already, to set specific goals for yourself as a way to keep yourself on track.

  Thanks for sharing...it really helps those of us that know we need to start the journey (seriously this time). It is nice to read about people who tried many times before getting it done...gives me hope that I can do it too.

    Wow. Congratulations on all your success. I checked out your site too and I really liked it. i hope and pray that I can do this too. So I can actually play with my kids, not just watch. I know what to do, I just don't seem to be able to make my hands not grab that snack! I've never known what it was like to be thin. Sometimes I think I was never meant too.     Great Job at sticking to what you want and making choices that are forever. Im headed to your fit to the finish page to read exactly what you did.. But I know setting goals even if they are little will get you started on the right path. emoticon

    I read your story and would really like to see the changes happen so much sooner than they have. Although I know the goals are mini success I am very much interested in any feedback you can give me to losing the weight, providing healthy meals for my family, and staying on the right track once I get there. Because I do alot of research I have alot of information in my head.....it's just nice sometimes to hear someone else say it to.
