Is Mirena right for me?

Monday, July 27, 2009

Really trying to figure out if having Mirena inserted was the right thing to do for me. I am very concerned after reading so many blogs about weight gain and Mirena. Perhaps Mirena is the main culprit for me not being able to loose weight and also the cause of my recent unexplained weight gain. I have had Mirena for about 9 months and have just noticed a 5 lb weight gain in less then a month. I work out aggressively 6 days a week sometimes 2x a day. I am also eating around 1800 calories a day. Looking for advice on how long I should stick it out with this BC, it is my only option beside a permanent fix, since I can no longer be on anything with estrogen since my mother passed away before the age of 50 from heart disease. I have had no other side effects from Mirena; no headaches, acne, loss of libido or depression JUST this recent weight gain and inability to loose weight. Has anyone experienced similar problems with Mirena.

Ack!!! No no no no no!!!!

I gained 20 pounds over the course of a year. That - and my body didn't like being pregnant when I was, and this IUD tricks the body into thinking it is pregnant. My breast swelled up two cup sizes (went from a 36A to a 38C - I'm now at a 36C) and they were extremely painful - it almost felt like I was lactating again. I grew some hairs on my chin, I was moody, depressed and I just felt "off". Libido? None. Everything I did to get the weight off wasn't working. At all.

My GYN tried to talk me into keeping it. I was so ticked off. She finally removed it and it was the best thing for me. My fiancÚ got a vasectomy - no more kiddos for us.

It has been about 6 months since I had my Mirena removed. My cycles are in proper order again, my sex drive is back full force and then some, and the weight is finally starting to come off. The depression is nearly gone.

Ultimately it is your choice. I do know several women who have had great experiences with Mirena. Unfortunately, I am not one of them.
