What If?

Saturday, July 25, 2009

I was reading through some of the message boards tonight, and was so struck by the number of questions on motivation and staying the course. It came to me that some of us think of weight loss as a temporary detour to travel before we get to our main destination.

You really could think of weight loss as a lifelong journey. Not that you will lose weight forever, but if after you've lost your weight, what if you keep on using all the tools and strategies you learn on your journey to be successful forever. If you can really make that connection in your head, then getting motivated might be easier.

If I had only been able to think that way the hundreds of times I tried to lose weight, I wouldn't have ended up morbidly obese. If I had only realized that losing weight wasn't the end of the journey, but rather the beginning.

So, if you can think of your journey as a lifelong road, rather than a temporary detour, perhaps your motivation will be renewed and strengthened.

Thanks for reading, and as always, if I can help - let me know! Diane

What if I hadn't read much longer would it have taken for me to realize my weight is a roadblock in my life and my journey is on the other side. Thanks for posting!

Great blog! I know this is what I need to do, but I have such a hard time thinking in that way. I don't know why it is so uncomfortable for me to think about changing what I have been doing forever!

Thank you, Diane for your post and for your inspirational journey. I really needed to hear it. I've been at this weight loss lifestyle for about a year and a half now and 20 or so lbs from where I will probably end up, and feeling a little less motivation. This is just what I needed to read, thank again, Sharon

Diane thank you it is evident that you have had success in your journey and you are right by saying we must look at it much more than just losing the weight and that is where are success will be.
