Each summer, the bible study group my DH and I lead joins other area groups in a combined study. This allows us to meet more people and gives our leaders a break from the rigors of weekly teaching. We also take turns hosting in our homes. Gatherings can range from one to four dozen people.
Last night, we traveled to a higher crime area of our large city, one without the tony shopping malls and chain restaurants. We sat out in the host's small back yard and he began by encouraging us to focus on what we were doing instead of on the loud music, barking dogs, random gunfire/fireworks emanating from the neighborhood. For the many suburbanites in the circle, it was a wake-up call, one that took some out of their comfort zones.
Our extended church family is quite diverse. We know that...and we love it. God works in our lives in big ways --- and in small ways. It's always a blessing. When we focus on Him, we find that the setting or the background of His people is more often than not, merely incidental. That was certainly the case last night as we shared around the circle. We were reminded once again...to simply listen. He's provided ept teachers in many forms.
