I finally did my first bellydance recital a few weeks ago. It was great! All that practice, and it felt like I was only on stage for two minutes LOL! Although DH recorded the performance, I haven't seen it yet. He showed it to my mom, and they both agreed that I was very fluid and graceful. I was so happy to hear them say that!
But on to the bigger news: two weeks before the recital, my dance instructor announced that she was holding auditions for the local dance troupe. She sent out the requirements, and seeing as I knew I sucked at zils, I didn't give another thought to auditioning. At the recital, I was persuaded to by several of the girls. Thinking that I didn't stand a chance of being chosen, I agreed to try out. I thought if anything else, I would make alternate best case, or more realistically I would at least accompany them to the bllydance competitions in Baltimore.
Here's how auditions went: she taught a routine three times and we had to dance to it. After her only showing it THREE times. Then we did our own routine which we practiced. Finally, we freestyled with zils to a song of her choice. She had a rubric which we were all graded on. Since I hadn't planned on trying out, I didn't have a planned routine. I did have a song and freestyled to that. And I thought I did pretty well on her routine. The freestyling zils was painful though LOL!
So imagine my surprise when I was chosen not as an alternate, but as a main member of the troupe! She told me that I'm a lot better than I think I am. She said my isolations were clean, my posture was perfect, and my poise was great. For poise, she meant that even when I messed up tiny sections of her planned routine, I didn't let it show on my face. She did, however, say that my zils were painful LOL! I need more help freestyling and with zils in general. That didn't bother me, because I knew that. So I focused on the very good things she said. I am so happy to have been chosen for the troupe, because I was competing with folks who have been dancing way longer than I have. In fact, the two others chosen have been dancing over three years, and I've only been dancing for 9 months maybe.
Of course, that meant more DVD purchases LOL! I've purchased three bellydance DVDs, one to help with zils and two to help with slow moves and arms. Oh, and I plan on purchasing one more that will help with improvisation and musicality. I am so proud of myself!!
Oh, and all this bellydancing have my abs looking great! I haven't consistently worked out since the last time I posted, but my abs are like rocks :)
