Valedictorian Speech

Sunday, May 24, 2009

Here's a great story from Dietitian_Becky (SparkPeople's dietitian). Congrats to her and her daughter for being valedictorian! This is a good example that SparkPeople is about far more than losing weight.

Chris (SparkGuy)

So my daughter had her high school graduation this morning. She had to give her little valedictorian speech. I had been banned from heaingr this speech earlier. She started her speech by saying that she recently was getting ready for school, brushing her teeth in her parent’s bathroom, and read her mom’s daily SparkPeople calendar which contained quotes and health tips. (Yes, it is my Spark calendar!)

She then gave the quote from Monday, May 18, by Albert Schweitzer. "

"In everyone’s life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.”

She then thanked those who have rekindled her spirit throughout the past 13 years of schooling. She ended with a call to action for her graduating class to keep their inner spirit blazing and to spark others in their life daily.

Little did Coach Nicole know when she was putting together this SparkPeople calendar that a page would end up in a speech at the Milan High School graduation ceremony. Thanks for Sparking my daughter with this quote. AND thanks for putting it on the date of May 18--perfect timing!

(And yes, there were tears and I remembered to take tissues. )

Kids notice EVERYTHING! It keeps you humble to know that you are a "most important person" in your child's life. My daughters long remember things I've forgotten - like using food coloring on the cream of wheat to make it "special". Thanks for sharing your day, it brightened mine. emoticon

That is cool. My daughter also recently graduated and also was valedictorian. She gave this great speech and I was doing so well. I had read it prior to the graduation day and thought I was doing great, being strong, although I really could have broken down at any given moment. Then she did it, she added to the end of the speech. "And mom, thanks for the great heart shaped pancakes this morning to start off this day I will remember forever." CRAP, I broke down. It was downhill from there, she cried on stage and then came to give me my flower and we both had our moment of tears. But what a day. I'll cherish it forever!

Its the little things that we think our kids dont see or even really put much thought into...imagine her Mom's sparkcalendar was motivation for her speech!!! Truly a blessing in disguise

Congratulations on raising a daughter who excelled to be valedictorian. I have a feeling that the "etc. etc." in your blog included her heart felt thanks to you. My son graduated last Thursday. It was an evening of smiles and tears. Nothing touched my heart like seeing him walk the stage, hear the cheers from our family, look up to the bleachers and smile. Later when he hugged me, I knew that the "etc. etc." was a life time of love in daily doses. May God continue to bless your journey in her life as she makes her way in a new direction.
