Cedar Key

Wednesday, May 13, 2009

Well, I guess I have to dispel some old (?) lore about Travis McGee in Cedar Key. As near as I can tell John McDonald never said that. Apparently that was just a "Semi True Story" from Jimmy Buffett. One other writer mentions that John McDonald used to come here to write... I have my doubts about that. All info that I could find relating the two were written after JB published "Incommunicado". How ever JB himself used to come here!

I'd like to come here for real someday. By the way, the above picture is of one of the common photos of Cedar Key. I stumbled on to it with Google Maps.

My next POI will be Crystal River, to see some manatees! I have been there before and did see many-a-tee.

Angie and I eventually did get here a few months before she became ill. We loved it there. I have some of my own pictures now. I'm glad she and I had time to do this before she died.

I found this blog entry on a beautiful morning in Cedar Key. We had been on our way to Sanibel, with no plans for the night on the way, and, ready to get off the interstate, we checked the map for the nearest water, and there it was. My wife said, "Cedar Key! Travis McGee!"
Yep, Jimmy put one over on us, with his literary license. Oh well, it was a beautiful place.
Part of my enjoyment of Sanibel is that I'm halfway through a reread of the Doc Ford series, and Doc is DEFINITELY based on old Travis!

    Fins up!

I think Travis McGee and his boat the Busted Flush were down in Fort Lauderdale, Bahia del mar to be exact. John D. MacDonald lived down at Siesta Key, near Sarasota. There's not much to see at Cedar Key, a couple of tourist shops, no beach, kind of a disappointment at the end of a long road.

I'll meet you at Crystal River and Homosassa, one of my favorite places in the world!
