Words CAN Be Enough... page 1

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

...to set the world on fire, to move mountains, to change a life... because words taken to heart become the arms, legs, hearts, and souls who stand in solidarity, who love as required, and do what must be done.

Words have always had a very important role in my life. I like how they taste... their texture and flavour as they roll over my tongue is something of a wonder and marvel to me!

They have nurtured my spirit and my personality.

They have informed my conscience and challenged my thinking.

They inspire, conspire, confound, delight, and humble me.

They have cut me to ribbons and have stitched me back together.

They have revealed themselves to be a powerful tool in my own hands, and in so doing, they have taught me (in addition to the things still being revealed to me) temperance, judiciousness, compassion, simplicity, economy, contrition and flexibility.

Thoughts/beliefs are essentially words strung together for maximum effect and we create what we repeatedly think. The words we choose to carry in our hearts, those that echo in the corners of our minds, and with which we choose to define our 'self'... these are the affirmation or death knell to our purpose and dreams.

This is my place to honour the words that touch me as I journey. I'm recording here the words that I want to carry forward with me. I hope you find something here to feed, encourage and inspire you.

Visit often... I will keep adding to the page... and I invite you to add your own favourite words in your comments!

emoticon "Promise me you'll always remember... You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think." CHRISTOPHER ROBIN (A. A. Milne)

emoticon "A friend knows the song in your heart and can sing it out for you even when the words have deserted you." BENJAMIN DISRAELI

emoticon "Never apologize for showing feeling (your needs, your dreams, your goals). When you do so, you apologize for the truth."

emoticon "In the absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia." AUTHOR UNKNOWN

emoticon “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.” * "Do, or do not. There is no 'try'.... Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter." * Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is." * "Named must your fear be before banish it you can." YODA, JEDI MASTER

emoticon "A man ought to take exercise not because he is too fat, but because he loves foils or horses or high mountains, and loves them for their own sake." G.K. CHESTERTON

emoticon "And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight inside the bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom." ANAIS NIN

emoticon "One's deepest wounds integrated become one's greatest power." RAMONAZF

emoticon "Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?"

emoticon "Is this REALLY the hill you want to die on?"

emoticon "You do the best you can. When you know better, you do better." MAYA ANGELOU

emoticon "You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.... We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the Glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same." MARIANNE WILLIAMSON
"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
from 'A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles'

emoticon "If you're achieving all of your goals, you're setting your bar too low!" TOM VENUTO

emoticon "Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons... for you are crunchy and good with ketchup." AUTHOR UNKNOWN

emoticon "A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ that a man should have to seek Him first to find her." MAYA ANGELOU

emoticon "We are ever being born, or dying, and the thrill of choosing which, is ours. Only once must we be born without our own consent. Only once must we die without our own permission." CALVIN MILLE

emoticon "It is impossible to spend your 'self' fighting back the demons in your head and NOT learn something. I now understand that breaking through my wall is something 'else'. It's definitely NOT running away 'from', and it's not even simply running 'to'... it's more about running 'through'." RAMONAZF

emoticon "In spite of illness, in spite even of the archenemy sorrow, one can remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in small ways." EDITH WHARTON

emoticon "Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense." RALPH WALDO EMERSON

emoticon "I like living. I have sometimes been wildly, despairingly, acutely miserable, racked with sorrow, but through it all I still know quite certainly that just to be alive is a grand thing." AGATHA CHRISTIE

emoticon "In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty... in the wisdom of uncertainty lies the freedom from our past, from the known, which is the prison of past conditioning. And in our willingness to step into the unknown, the field of all possibilities, we surrender ourselves to the creative mind that orchestrates the dance of the universe." DEEPAK CHOPRA

emoticon "Time doesn't heal anything. It's what you choose to do with the time that makes all the difference in the world." DR. PHIL MCGRAW

emoticon "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.
Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be. Never mistake activity for achievement. You can't let praise or criticism get to you. It's a weakness to get caught up in either one." JOHN WOODEN

emoticon "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." VINCE LOMBARDE

emoticon "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song." LOU HOLTZ

emoticon "Nothing worth doing is completed in our lifetime,
therefore, we are saved by hope. Nothing true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore, we are saved by faith. Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone. Therefore, we are saved by love. No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as from our own; therefore, we are saved by the final form of love, which is forgiveness." REINHOLD NIEBUHR

emoticon "If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it." MARY ENGELBREIT

emoticon "To the question of your life you are the answer, and to the problems of your life you are the solution." JOE CORDARE

emoticon "He who distinguishes the true savor of his food can never be a glutton; he who does not cannot be otherwise."

emoticon "Put on your big girl panties and deal with it!"

emoticon "Lifestyle is unencumbered by obstacles. This means that the things I keep tripping over are something other than obstructive. They are instructive, and part of the directions on my map. Lifestyle is intentional and specific to me. Lifestyle is experiencing, expressing and enjoying every aspect of my life intensely and ardently to the full." RAMONAZF

emoticon "Stop being in such a hurry, slow down and enjoy the process. Day-by-day, you're growing stronger, you're building up new memories, new associations and new events to base your future decisions on. You're knocking down walls that have stood for years, but it's the chipping away at it that gets the job done. Dynamite may bring down the wall but it also leaves a mess in it's place. Chipping away at it, and carry the debris away is the better way to go, for when the wall comes down for good, there's nothing left to clean up later." KATHERYN MARTYN, M.NLP

emoticon "God doesn't give you the people you want, He gives you the people you NEED - To help you, to hurt you, to leave you, to love you and to make you into the person you were meant to be."

emoticon "Each friend represents a world in us - a world possibly not born until they arrive." ANAIS NIN

emoticon "Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit." VINCE LOMBARDI

emoticon "I finally feel like I'm growing into the person I was meant to be, and while the energy waxes & wanes, my inner motivation is now on autopilot, constantly fueled by the positive energy from my mental and physical training." LADYROSE

emoticon "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary." STEVE JOBS

emoticon "Listen to the sound of the genuine in yourself. There is something in everyone that waits and listens for the sound of the genuine in ourselves. And it is the only true guide we will ever have, if you cannot hear it in yourself, you will spend all of your life on the end of strings that somebody else pulls." MARIAN WRIGHT EDELMAN
Commencement Speech to the graduating class of Tarbut V'Torah in Irvine, California

emoticon "We are all born with genius. It's like our fairy godmother. But what happens in life is that we stop listening to our inner voices, and we no longer have access to this extraordinary ability to create poetry." MILTON GLASER

emoticon "When you come to the edge of all the light you know, and are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing one of two things will happen: There will be something solid to stand on, or you will be taught how to fly." BARBARA J. WINTER

emoticon "If we were all completely content, never LUSTING for the things we don’t have—what would be the reason to get out of bed?" MTER67

emoticon "I’ve had no choice, but to take notice.... my every sense is engaged in this process of self-discovery. I feel ALIVE in ways I've forgotten... perhaps in ways I have not yet been. I'm learning to be fully present to myself and others. Every road leads to a new discovery. I work hard to not only just finish... but for every small success I have. The journey is not wasted." RAMONAZF

emoticon "Plant seeds of expectation in your mind; cultivate thoughts that anticipate achievement. Believe in yourself as being capable of overcoming all obstacles and weaknesses." NORMAN VINCENT PEALE

emoticon "The difference between perseverance and resistance is that one comes from a strong will, and the other from a strong won't."

emoticon "The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running... or to the one who keeps on walking even with a stitch in their side... or the one who hobbles along in whatever way possible, because finishing the course has become more important than being able to run." RAMONAZF, in reference to Ecclesiastes 9:11
"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."

emoticon "A true friend never gets in your way unless you happen to be going down." ARNOLD GLASOW

emoticon "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." ARISTOTELES

emoticon "We're all scared... if you're not scared, you're not paying attention!" DR. MIRANDA BAILEY

emoticon "If you perform a good habit for three years, the effect on your body is as though you have done it your entire life. Even better, you can start to measure a difference on your body in three months!" MICHAEL ROIZEN, MD & MEHMET OZ, MD

emoticon "Habit isn't about acts of heroism. It's about establishing a consistent, almost automatic pattern of behavior over time. Much of the challenge of successful self-discipline is throttling your enthusiasm so you don't burn out. Keep the focus on meeting some clearly-defined, rigorously unambitious daily "good enough." AUTHOR UNKNOWN

emoticon "The body you are given will be yours for the duration of your time here on earth. Love it or hate it or reject it, it is the only one you will receive in this lifetime. It will be with you from the moment you draw your first breath to the last beat of your heart. Since there is a no-refund, no-exchange policy on this body of yours, it is essential that you learn to transform your body from a mere vessel into a beloved partner and lifelong ally , the relationship between you and your body is the most fundamental and important relationship of your lifetime. It is the blueprint from which all your other relationships are built." CHERIE CARTER-SCOTT, PH.D

emoticon "You are where you are for a reason. The people you associate with, are the very people God wants you to serve. They are also the people God has sent to teach you the lessons that you need to learn." AUTHOR UNKNOWN

emoticon "If you don't have time for prayer and scripture study, you are busier than God ever intended you to be. This can also be said for eating healthy and excercising." WRITINGMOMMA

emoticon "In our lives, we have two or three opportunities to be a hero, but almost every day, we have the opportunity not to be a coward." SPANISH PROVERB

emoticon "If you want something you have never had, you must do something you have never done." THOR WINSTON

emoticon "The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude to me is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, gift, or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you... we are in charge of our attitudes." CHARLES SWINDOLL

emoticon "Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy." DALE CARNEGIE

emoticon "Anything poignantly human and unguarded bears witness to both the human and the divine, in every measure balanced... and we can't help but take notice and respond. Our response bears a witness all its own." RAMONAZF

emoticon "Without me even realizing what they are doing, the voices in my head kick off their boots, light up cigars, and settle in on my sofa in their under shirts." MTER67 and I responed: "The voices in my head are A LOT meaner... but they look a lot like yours... and they scratch repulsively and pick their teeth! UGH! The funny thing is that I think my own voices suddenly have less power now that I see them, through your eyes, as the truly reprehensibe creatures they are. Somehow when they've spoken to me in the past they have had an air of authority. Now, it's suddenly really hard to take these boorish clowns seriously!" RAMONAZF

emoticon "Stop looking for THE key. There isn't one. There are lots of keys that open something, but there is no Master Key that opens all the locks. The "key" is to use every key you have, and open as many healthy doors as you can, and do your best to keep them open. If you don't tend to the door it finds itself shut again, and then you have to find that key in the big ring of keys to open it again." NJMATTICE

emoticon "Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals (goals, dreams, purpose, our joy in living)." SAMUEL ULLMAN

emoticon "Life is too short, or too long, for me to allow myself the luxury of living it badly." PAULO COELHO, Eleven Minutes

emoticon "Life becomes bearable only when one has come to terms with who one is, both in one's own eyes and in the eyes of the world. We all of us must come to terms with what and who we are, and recognize that this wisdom is not going to earn us any praise, that life is not going to pin a medal on us for recognizing and enduring our own vanity or egoism or baldness or our pot-belly. No, the secret is that there's no reward and we have to endure our characters and our natures as best we can, because no amount of experience or insight is going to rectify our deficiencies, our self-regard, or our cupidity. We have to learn that our desires do not find any real echo in the world. We have to accept that the people we love do not love us, or not in the way we hope. We have to accept betrayal and disloyalty, and, hardest of all, that someone is finer than we are in character or intelligence." SANDOR MARAI

emoticon "You have to become healthy and happy to lose weight... not lose weight to be happy and healthy!" UNKNOWN

emoticon "Goals are great. They are energizing. But I must always evaluate them in light of what's most important in the light of eternity.... Keeping my physical aspirations in line with spiritual growth is key.... Along with loving myself through taking care of my physical body, am I challenging my spiritual growth as well by focusing on developing a richer quality of relating and loving others - encouraging others and adding value to others lives? When I'm on my deathbed, my peace of mind and heart won't be found in how "chiseled" I was able to make my body look... it will be found in a life lived with RELATIONSHIPS at the forefront - with my Lord, myself, and others - that will allow me to rest in the peace and contentment of a life lived well." ONEAGLESWINGS

emoticon"Justification and rationalization are only mental masturbations - in the end, you only screw yourself." GMACAMI
(I know this may seem harsh to some, but when I think about it in these terms, it becomes very easy to see what in my life is simply self-serving and not even remotely representative of who I really am. It helps me see what consistently calls me away from myself.)

emoticon"All great things have three essential elements; a great root of faith, a great ball of doubt, and a fierce tenacity of purpose."

emoticon "A child can always teach an adult three things: to be happy for no reason, to always be busy with something, and to know how to demand with all his might that which he desires." PAULO COELHO

emoticon "People usually fail when they are on the verge of success. So give as much care to the end as to the beginning." LAO-TZU

emoticon "Jealousy is simply and clearly the fear that you do not have value. Jealousy scans for evidence to prove the point - that others will be preferred and rewarded more than you. There is only one alternative - self-value. If you cannot love yourself, you will not believe that you are loved. You will always think it's a mistake or luck. Take your eyes off others and turn the scanner within. Find the seeds of your jealousy, clear the old voices and experiences. Put all the energy into building your personal and emotional security. Then you will be the one others envy, and you can remember the pain and reach out to them." JENNIFER JAMES

emoticon "The greatest day in your life and mine is when we take total responsibility for our attitudes. That's the day we really grow up." JOHN MAXWELL

emoticon"Courage, sacrifice, determination, commitment, toughness, heart, talent, guts. That's what little girls are made of; the hell with sugar and spice." UNKNOWN

emoticon"The enemy is subtle, how be it we're deceived? When the truth's in our hearts and we still don't believe?" BOB DYLAN, Precious Angel "I choose to know the truth about myself no matter how beautiful it is." (THANK YOU, TEENY_BIKINI)

emoticon"Do what experts since the dawn of recorded history have told you you must do: pay the price by BECOMING THE PERSON YOU WANT TO BECOME. It's not nearly as difficult as living unsuccessfully.' EARL NIGHTINGALE

emoticon"A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said 'I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, violent one, the other wolf is the loving compassionate one.' The grandson asked him, 'Which wolf will win the fight in your heart?' The grandfather answered, 'The one I feed.'" BLACKHAWK

emoticon "Our running shoes are really erasers. Every step erases a memory of a past failure. Every mile brings us closer to a clean slate. Each footstrike rubs away a word, a look, or an event, which led us to believe that success is beyond our grasp." JOHN 'The Penguin' BINGHAM

emoticon "The shape of your body obeys the shape of your beliefs about love, value and possibility. To change your body, you must first understand that which is shaping it. Not fight it. Not force it. Not deprive it. Not shame it. Not do anything but accept and... understand it." GENEEN ROTH

emoticon "I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together." MARILYN MONROE

emoticon "What a healthy weight is for you as an individual has little or nothing to do with what a healthy weight is for anybody else. Within a very broad range, a healthy weight is the weight that a particular individual maintains while living a healthy life."
PAUL CAMPOS, author of 'The Obesity Myth'

emoticon "To show great love for God and neighbor we need not do great things. It is how much love we put in the doing that makes our offering something beautiful for God. BLESSED MOTHER TERESA

emoticon "A successful woman is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at her." DAVID BRINKLEY

emoticonInner Light Healing Center: "The Seekers Path... Like a seed, we need time to open ourselves to the secrets locked in the darkness of our being. A seed surrenders itself to the warmth and blackness of the earth in order for all elements to come together to allow new life to arise. Letting the darkness embrace us helps us learn deeper truths and greater insights otherwise unavailable to our knowing. Most of us are afraid of our inner darkness because we believe that it hides what is evil, bad or unacceptable. Indeed we may face some of those fears as we enter the darkness. However, as we give ourselves over to the process of growth we will come to know that it is the darkness that provides the food for our expansion into the Light".

emoticon"The seed has no defense: it must give way, abandoning itself to the new weave of life that will thread forth from its own dissolving. A new plant will gradually rise, observing the ancient symmetry of growth: root farther into darkness and rise towards the sun." JOHN O'DONAHUE

emoticon"The first footprint that you make when leaving your comfort zone, is the most important step you will ever take. It is the beginning of your awakening to a new perception of yourself. It is a Footprint that can never be erased. It is a symbol of your commitment to walk, fly, think, or run into the unknown, to find that part of yourself that you have never challenged to the extreme. Each footprint you make towards that goal will change your life, and will remain embedded in the experience of those who wondered “why, ” as you passed them by, long after you have reached that center within."

emoticon"If you set a course and bend your sails to every wind to further the journey, always trusting that the course is right, it will, in fact, be right, even though the ship itself may go down at any time during the voyage." Love is always the right course, and that's the course you are on. Trust it. Any of us could be shipwrecked at any moment. But if we are on the right course, and God sends His angels to journey with us, we are not lost. I don't think Nick has ever been lost. He sets his course, and steps into it with faith, knowing his ship could go down at any moment. That is valiant, courageous, and why he inspires so many people. God bless him. I will close with another quote by Willa Cather: "Where there is great love, miracles happen." You are loving greatly. The miracle part is not up to you. Just breathe and be and work steadily along." MARGARET MEAD

Pretty Words
Poets make pets of pretty, docile words:
I love smooth words, like gold-enamelled fish
Which circle slowly with a silken swish,
And tender ones, like downy-feathered birds:
Words shy and dappled, deep-eyed deer in herds,
Come to my hand, and playful if I wish,
Or purring softly at a silver dish,
Blue Persian kittens fed on cream and curds.
I love bright words, words up and singing early;
Words that are luminous in the dark, and sing;
Warm lazy words, white cattle under trees;
I love words opalescent, cool, and pearly,
Like midsummer moths, and honied words like bees,
Gilded and sticky, with a little sting.

emoticon"Because i live in a world that hates woman and i am one … who is struggling desperately not to hate myself and my best girlfriends, my whole life is constantly felt, by me, as a contradiction. In order for me to exist, i must believe that two contradictory things can exist in the same place."
Kathleen Hanna, “Jigsaw Youth”, Jigsaw #4 (1991)
