Last weekend was my first sprint triathlon. It started as a new years resolution with a couple friends. As time and resolutions go, some of my friends dropped out of the race with out even trying. But, My friend Casey and I trained as much as we could. Being committed to the race started in January, end of January. That meant 3 months to train. Me being an overly organized person, I got online and started to analyze exactly what I got myself into. A 500m Swim, a 12 mile bike, and 2 mile run. At this point, the only thing I was nervous about was the run, that was until I got on my bike for the first time since I was 15. Yeah, it has been that long.
So week after week I trained as much as I could do. I would get up early to have my train session done by the time the kids and my hubby woke up for the day. I trained about 4-5 days a week. Bob, my husband, works 2nd shift, so working out in the evening was not-exisitant with 3 kiddos. By about March, I began training the actual course of the Tri, so I knew what to expect. This was much easier to know what to do, and practice the transitions easily. Week of. After trying to get as much training time in as possible it was time.
This was a two day tri. Swim was on Friday night and based on your swim was what time you started on Saturday. My cheering section on Friday, consist of my best friend Patty, and my Mom and Dad. As I got in the water, and did stroke after stroke. I was passing both people in front of me. That is actually really reassuring. My swim Time was 10:27. Now I have my time set for the Morning…my start time was 10:10.27. That night I had a nightmare that I woke up to a foot of snow, so when I woke up to rain, I was happy. As I arrive on Saturday, I got my number, and get everything in order. My cheering section on Saturday, was my Mom, Patty, Bob, and my 3 kids. Bob was a trooper. He had to deal with three kids in the rain. Time to start. Everyone lines up in a group according to your swim time. They Start the clock at 10am and when your swim time came you grabbed your bike and started the course. The bike course was 6 miles uphill and then 6 miles back down. I thought my up hill wasn’t very good. But come to find out, that is where I passed the post people. I took it to my advantage. Nearing the end of the bike was difficult due to the rain. Hills are tough on bikes in the rain. I finished and put up my bike, took of my sweater, and gloves and off on the run. I had good time, and everyone was so great cheering you on. As you crossed the finish line, they had you a metal for finishing and a water. My total time was 1:23.40. This put me 110th out of 250 and 6th in my age group of 25-29 year old women. I am happy for my first triathlon.
At this point I am definitely addicted to this. Right now I am looking up for this summer to do. Maybe, I will get to the point that I can do an Iron Girl. Eventually.
