Emma's First T-Ball Game

Monday, April 06, 2009

Oh the joys of being a grandmother! Miss Emma, my granddaughter that will turn 5 on May 25th, had her first T-Ball game today. My precious little girl in a uniform ----- her long blonde ponytail sticking out of the back of her hat!

They arrived at the field about the same time I did and she spied me immediately. She came running up to me with her little pink bat and ball glove. "Oh Gigi, I'm going to play ball today and I am going to pay attention and not play in the sand." "Where is BopBop"? I told her that he was still at the bank, but would be coming as soon as he could." She was satisfied with the answer.

We walked together around the field and she entered to join her team mates. I almost cried. My baby is growing up so fast.

They did a little pre game warm up and before I knew it, she had the largest cheering section of any child there --- 2 grandmothers, 2 grandfathers, 1 step-grandmother, 1 step-grandfather, her mother and father, her baby sister, 1 aunt, 1 uncle and his girl friend, 1 great-aunt, a cousin, and a couple that are family friends. She was so proud, she grinned from ear to ear. "Where is BopBop?" she yell to me. I began to worry because I was afraid she would leave the field when he arrived.

I saw him when he arrived, and I looked to see if she saw him. She didn't. He came in, sat beside me and we started talking. Someone told us to look, and there she was at the fence grinning and waving to all.

The game started, and she was on second base. Within 10 minutes she was sitting in the grass picking flowers with not a care in the world. The ball game went on. She got up for a little while, but then began playing in the sand. The ball game continued.

Her team's time to come in to bat came and all the kids came running off the field ---- not Emma. She was in her nature exploring mode and one of the other kids ran out to get her. They trotted off the field together.

Her team mates began to bat. I was amazed at how well some of them did. I looked in the dugout and she was sitting on the ground at the fence grinning at us ------ no care in the world. And finally ------- Emma's time at bat.

She pranced up grinning and waving to all of us. The coach helped her line up with the "T" to hit. She swung and the ball went out to the pitcher. He scrambled for the ball and Emma stood there. We all yelled --- "Run Emma" ----- and she took off. She didn't make it, but didn't seem to worry.

They returned to the field and she continued with her activities ---- standing by the base, playing in the sand, and looking every where except the game. In a little while she stood up and starting walking off the field. (It wasn't time.) Her mother walked to the fence to see what was wrong.------Nothing, she was just coming in to get ready for her next bat. (It was not her time, she just liked batting.) Nicole talked her into going back on the field. We played in the sand again, and looked for bugs in the grass-- while the game continued.

They came in again and progressed down the roster. Emma's time again. She went up to the plate, line up, reared back and knocked the tar out of the ball. We all went crazy. "Run Emma" She took off and made it! She made her way around the bases as the others hit and when she made it to home plate, she stomped and just stood there. I don't think she was ready for it to be over ---- she was enjoying her moment in the "lime light". The coach had to run up and get her to move before she got knocked over.

The game went on and she walked off the field a second time. Her mother went to the fence. " Emma's finished and ready to home." She coaxed her into staying.

At the end of the game, both teams lined up. They walked past each other "high-five-ing." She had played her first game. It was hard work for all of us.

What a wonderful day. We were all so proud!
