When I was a little girl, I used to help gather eggs with my cousins in Iowa. The hen house was a strange, exciting place for this city girl. It was warm, cozy, noisy, safe, secure....lots of activity and clucking going on by those fat fluffy old hens. I would sneak my hand into a nest and sometimes, it was empty and I would feel a little sad, but then the next one would be filled with beautiful brown or white eggs! It was like finding a little stash of gold!
Spark People is my "little stash of gold". It's a wonderful, huge, amazing website. Everything you need is right at your finger tips..all it takes is for you to make a real commitment and use it daily. One of the suggestions to help with your weight loss is to blog. It helps you express your feelings and understand why you might be struggling with your weight in the first place. I really haven't taken much time to blog since I usually express a lot of my feelings and emotions to my friends here at Spark People in the message board "Welcome to the Hen House".
I began this chat room over seven months ago in the "fit over 50 team "and it has evolved into over 1000 posts and a wonderful group of women who meet daily to laugh, blow off steam, share concerns and especially to share ideas and celebrate our journey to healthier lives!
These are my friends, my confidants, and my sisters in support. They don't scold me if I've indulged in a sinful little cookie, but they cheer me on if I've had the strength to pass it up. They don't smile at me and secretly think, "My she's put on a lot of weight!"....instead they send me virtual flowers and lots of hugs and cheers when I can finally zip up an old pair of jeans again. I don't feel crazy when I get so excited because I lost a half of a pound...who in my life really cares except the "chicks" at the hen house! We send balloons to each other and hoot and cheer.
I've now lost almost 45 pounds and I owe it all to Spark people and the support I get from these wonderful friends. We share recipes, exercise tips, jokes, gardening ideas, knitting patterns and books. We're all ages, incomes, educational backgrounds, and from all over the country. No one is bitter, no one is rude - instead, always up beat, always encouraging. I know I will reach my goal because I have them there holding my hand and gently tugging me along. When I consider how much my health has improved since I've begun this journey....one might say, I owe these women my life!
If anyone is reading this and struggling to find a friend and a place to join in for amazing support....stop by....fluff you feathers and roost a bit with us. There's always room for one more hen in the coop!
