Well today was the official start of the training for a 12K race in May locally called the Bloomsday Race. It is 7 weeks from tomorrow. There is a 7 week training course that starts at one mile and increases by another miles each week. Let me remind everyone that I am not a little woman - today the scale read 243 (yeah!!!). I did the warm up...got to the start line towards the middle of the pack....and away we went. I really didnt know anyone there - saw someone I know from SP but she is a runner and I am sooooo the walker. Anyway, earphones in, The Clash playing away, gloves on, water in hand, feet moving. I can hear the runners coming around on my left. I see the skinny minnies and dont worry. A SP friend who has done this herself warned me about the skinnies and not to get caught up in it. I do have to admit that it was disheartening to see the old lady birgade run pass me. But I held my ground. The were runners and I am a walker. Drums beating in my ears (The Clash not blood pressure issue)...keeping a good pace. But how to push myself? I start scanning the people ahead of me for those with butts as big as mine or bigger. That big butt becomes my target. I must catch up and pass that big butt. I passed blue butts, black buts, and towards the end of the route today....I found the purple butt....caught up and passed them all. Soon I was with only smaller butts...and the 1 mile was over....18.30 minutes ....better than I thought I could do. I am excited about next week and the 2 mile route. I will once again have The Clash playing in my ears, strong beat, easy to sing, scanning the horizon for the next big butt to pass.
