My "reasons" for leaving and returning to Spark People

Monday, February 09, 2009

Last year when I started, I have to admit that a lot of the reason I didn't stay active long was the challenges... I had been on other sites that had weight loss challenges. The first thing you did was get set up on teams of maybe 5-9 members from that point on it wasn't about helping each other along... it was about beating the other teams. I know that competition can be good, and is often needed, so is the support!

Then our team leader: MrsHoneyC - well, she just wouldn't get off our backs about water!
Water! Water! Water! I wasn't ready for that..... it couldn't be that simple! Months later, I was still getting e-mails from her (Team e-mails) and I'd still check out the pages & such. I was finding it harder and harder to ignore that taunting "Have you had your water today?"
So, I got a Brita filter because I can't tolerate the chlorine taste in the town water. I started filtering water and enjoyed drinking it. Ok, so maybe, just maybe I'll give this sparkpeople thing another try....

About that time, a friend had invited me over for coffee. While we were having coffee she was telling me how she doesn't eat hardly anything, yet she's gaining so much weight. She has high blood pressure, her husband has heart problems. So this is really concerning her. I was just starting to tell her about sparkpeople, but had to stop while she got dinner started. She put a nice piece of meat in the frying pan and COVERED it with meat tenderizer! When I questioned her about the meat tenderizer she told me that her husband buys that for her to use on the meat. Why? Because the salt she used to use is no good for him! I made her sit down and look at the back of the bottle, the ingredients (garlic salt, this salt, that salt) and the serving size and sodium content. Needless to say, it shocked her. She wanted to know where she could learn more about things like that. I took her to sparkpeople on her computer and helped her set up her own account. Now she can find all kinds of useful information. Ok, so, had I actually helped her?

"Gulp"
Now I have to make myself go back, Maybe no one will remember me..... Maybe the TL is off her water kick.....
That very day I get another of those blasted team e-mails from MrsHoneyC and the reminder to drink my water.....

I had gone over MrsHoneyC's page to maybe find conflicting information between what she says as team leader and what she does.... nope, nothing like that. I know that she was where I am and she knows how I can get where I want to be...

So, like the little kid, finally giving up on the temper tantrum, I decide it's time to listen instead of fight.

Guess what I found??? I like it! It is so much easier when I'm not fighting everything. My time is now, and I thank God that I have someone here that not only knows the way, but is more than willing to teach me (and hadn't given up on me)

So I left because I couldn't face the truth of what I had to do, I came back because I had to face the truth and was ready for it.

    Hi,

I am not sure if you know who I am, but Mrshoneyc (Rita) is my closet friend. We have known each other for over 14 years now. Her and I have pulled each other through times that could be turned into a novel. But she did most of the pulling..lol. That is her nature, we have always been there for each other. Through these years of knowing her she would do anything for you regardless if you wanted it or not. She is and has always been ANAL! But that is what everyone loves about her. She will tell you like it is and no sugar coating nothing. The picture she has on her page is her and I. She has been my ROCK through this and through the years. She has become so many peoples ROCK here and I am so proud of what she has done, along with all the accomplishments. I am glad you decided to come back.

When I left, I wasn't running away from anything but me. I also continued to get those team emails. And I have to tell you, when I decided to kick my butt back to doing what is right, I knew there was no place but on MRSHONEYC's team!! I needed her to give me that proverbial kick in the pants!!! Rita is the reason I have done as well as I have!! Even if the weight is coming off slower than I'd like at least it is coming off! Way to go on your decision to come back and on sharing spark people with a friend!!!

Yeah, well, you can always trust Rita to be "pushing" water, you know! :)

Cheers,
Maya
