Monday is the first day of the Chinese New Year. We’re ending the year of the Rat, the first in the cycle of Chinese Zodiac. There’s a legend about the animals all being invited to a banquet. Each of those that came had a year named after them. Those born in the year are believed to have the qualities of whichever animal sign is in that year. The tricky thing for us westerners is that our new year starts on January 1 while the Chinese New Year starts in late January or early February. That means if you were born in before the start of the Chinese New Year – that info on your placemat is probably not right. Check out the previous year.
Anyway – the year is also supposed to have characteristics of the animal as well. So, this being the year of the ox, it’s a good time to plan on investing hard work into my goals. Here was the prediction for the Rat year:
“2008 will be an Earth Rat year. Rat years are always choppy and appeal mostly to those with a finely-developed sense of economy. But the Earth Rat year (The last one was 1948) is also chockablock with market upsets and other unspeakable bolts from the blue. NO. I can't tell you what color, size or shape the bolts will be. Just think surprise events which jolt your synapses and give your heart goose bumps. I am not threatening earthquakes or typhoons, although we will surely see our share of those. The bolts from the blue will be more personal than that. They will take the form of accidents or mishaps due to inattention, clumsiness or pure bad luck. In an Earth Rat year, we learn (usually the hard way) that we cannot possibly anticipate what might happen next. Some might say, "Then let's just have fun. Why worry?" Others of you will shudder and shake, fearing insecurity and mourning free lunches.”
Sounds about right to me – hmm I’ve not had any car accidents - ;last year I had two. I seriously injured my back. My Dad suffered a brain bleed. My sister ended her marriage of over 25 years. Everything was really erratic. I started and stopped my exercise and eating plans all year long. It seemed that I didn’t get anywhere with anything. Stop and Go in my relationship. It was a year of Monday mornings.
This year it’s time for: “new beginnings. The main difference is the Ox is associated with building to last and slow but sure action. Even more so than last year we all have to make good choices, as that which is begun now is likely to have long term consequences. As with last year, this is an Earth year. The difference is this one is yin rather than yang. It is thus likely to be less tumultuous. On a personal level, better results are more likely to be achieved by reacting to circumstances and going with the flow rather than aggressively charging forward and initiating a lot of action.
So, I made but didn’t keep my New Years resolutions for 2009. Life seems lie it may be getting less chaotic. I’ve got yeat another chance to begin again. And the “force” just might be with me….
